WATERFORD – Dillon Moltz earned the moniker first time Late Model division winner at the Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night.

Though survivor might have been the more fitting name for him.

When the dust settled on some heavy battles out front it was Moltz, of Waterford, crossing the finish line first in the 30-lap Late Model feature for his first career victory in the division.

Keith Rocco of Wallingford was second and Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton third.

Moltz was running third behind leader Jeff Smith and second place Jason Palmer for a restart with two laps remaining in the event.

Coming through turns three and four before taking the white flag, Smith and Palmer made contact, opening a lane for Moltz to make his move coming out of turn four. Three three drivers went down the frontstretch three wide, with Moltz holding the slight advantage in turn one. In turn two Smith, in the middle, went spinning.

Smith’s spin brought out the caution and just after the yellow flew, Moltz and Palmer spun together in turn four.

“Those guys were going pretty hard at it,” Moltz said. “I told my spotter on the last restart ‘Those guys are going to do something, we should be there.’ They were door slamming each other all the way through [turns three and four] and they were sideways and I thought they were going to wreck so I was going low to miss it and next thing I know I had the position on everyone going into [turn] one.”

Palmer ended up with a flat tire in the incident, losing second place. Moltz was given his spot back at the front of the field and easily held off Rocco on the final restart.

5 Responses to Dillon Moltz Gets Through Wild Event To Capture First Late Model Win At Waterford Speedbowl

  1. Wayne Smith says:

Shawn I know you do your best to cover the stories, but
that is not how it went down. Dillon drove into the dirt
in the fourth turn and drove into Jeff pushing him into the middle of the track ( just like he raced at Stafford )
then when they got to the first turn he slammed into Jeff
pushing him into Jason Palmer causing the wreck. Jeff and Jason were wrecked who were first and second at the line,
and the track didn’t put Dillion to the rear for causing the wreck so he thinks that he did the right thing.
The sad thing is that now three drivers got wrecked (which
Iam not saying the name of the third ) and now they will have to take care of matters on their own because the track didn’t. I feel bad for Mark Cooper who owns the 28
because he is a great guy but now it’s not going to be good !

Do you want some Kleenex to go with that?Palmer and Smith were overdriving thier cars.Moltz just took advantage and your not happy……..Get a Life!

I have been watching racing for a very long time. FORGET any comntact prior to the incident between one and two where moltz took advantage of palmer and smith banging the hell outta each other.. smith got the short end of the stick and palmer then dumped moltz between three and four.. sorry for smith..good for moltz he did what any driver would have done in that position. palmer will continue to overdrive plain and simple.. the fact you (Wayne Smith)post “its not going to be good” smells of retaliation.. great.. more wrecks for the late models.. good job Mr Smith

So Dillion did what any driver would do? What…drive like a premadonna hammerhead? All late model drivers should by stock in five star body parts and front end parts as long as dillion is at waterford.

oil instead of blood…I guess you need glasses…lets see. the front two drivers are leaning on each other (putting it mildly).the contact in the corner results in an abrupt halt to any fwd momentum..should the third place car who is driving as hard as he can(and he should) pull over and let them get it straightened out ?? or go underneath ..for the win.track made the right call in placing moltz at the head of the field as well…I am sure one of the two cars in question is one of your favorites… as for the stocking of body panels .. if I am not mistaken the announcers were thrilled with the action ..”the late models are back” was what I recalled hearing.. no one likes a winner.perhaps you and Mr Smith can get your drivers to stop making contact so you don`t have to do any bodywork during the week…perhaps Scott Taply can impliment a no contact rule for the late models so you and Mr Smith can sleep at night
