Sylvia Orcutt of Kensington was so happy when Bosch replaced a defective dishwasher last year that she almost forgot about the troubled original.

The sparkle in her eyes disappeared, however, when she received a notification in February from a collection agency seeking $287, including fees, linked to an old repair bill.
