A Teen’s $998 Lesson At Used-Car Dealer
Here’s the latest TBL column, appearing online Friday and in The Courant Sunday in the Smarter Living section:
Connecticut is part of Lemon Law lore, having passed in 1982 the country’s first such regulations protecting consumers who purchase defective new automobiles.
Buy a used car in the state, however, and you’re just as likely to have money sucked from your wallet. The state’s used-car warranty only protects owners who have paid at least $3,000 for a vehicle that’s no older than six years.
Beau Berman, a reporter at down-the-hall-from-TBL Fox CT, recently spotlighted unfortunate customers of The Car Place in Somers. One, Sarah Malo of Northampton, Mass., saw a 1996 Chevrolet Corsica “priced right” at $998 in a Car Placed listing on Craigslist.
She gave it a single test drive, then returned the next day and bought the Corsica. Soon after, loud, unnatural sounds seemed to emerge from the exhaust. Alarmed, she brought it to a mechanic. Better sit down, Sarah.
