Big-Money AC Fails In First Heat Wave. Fix Time: 3 Months?

This summer’s heat waves were downgraded from barely bearable to intolerable by John and Vivian Latella of West Granby as soon as they heard a desperate noise in May from their bedroom’s high-end air conditioner.

It was the year’s first call to duty for the little-used AC, one of two Friedrich in-wall units the couple purchased from the S.K. Lavery Appliance Co. in West Hartford late last August for $747 each (with a $250 installation fee).

An S.K. Lavery technician visited within a week and diagnosed the problem as a faulty bearing. He told the Latellas the part would arrive within a week. But it didn’t.
