Mortgage rates started the new year with a slight shift downward nationally, according to data released Thursday by Freddie Mac. The 30-year rate averaged 3.34 percent, down from 3.35 the previous week. The 15-year rate averaged 3.34, down from 3.35.

15-year: 2.68 percent
