A sound bar by nature is a con artist that tricks owners into thinking they’re listening to multiple speakers, like a real surround system, instead of one long pretzel-stick speaker.

The surround sound ruse almost never works because human eyes and ears know better. (We’re such a smart species.) Vizio’s S4251W-B4 sound bar system — must we prove we’re so smart with complex model names? — drops any pretense.

This 42-inch sound bar is actually part of an ensemble that includes a wireless subwoofer, two tiny surround speakers, Bluetooth and an unusually sophisticated remote control that makes this $329.99 package a serious player among complex-named systems.
