Q: “Long ago, I started to use the self-checkout at Stop & Shop because of the incredibly long lines at the manned checkouts. Last week, I was at the self-checkout lane in Southington and, as I often do, I was purchasing some bagels from the bakery section, six of them.
“I touched he screen where it showed the picture of the bagel. Then, as instructed, I touched the number six and hit ‘Enter.’ I was reaching to scan the next item as the belt reversed, sending the bagels back my way and the voice loudly announced, ‘You are not allowed to purchase this item!’
