A New Definition of Pro-Choice: Gun Rights Group Seeks to Appeal to Women

by Categorized: Gun control Date:

A new radio ad by the Connecticut Citizens Defense League borrows some of the language of the abortion-rights movement as it makes a case against tougher gun laws.

\”In Connecticut, I can chose whom I marry and what I do with my body,\’\’ a female announcer says during the 60-second radio ad. \”But there are those who would try to take away my right to chose how I defend my loved ones. Don\’t let my choice be taken away.\”

The radio ad is currently airing on several radio stations in the state.

A video version of the ad, which can be viewed on YouTube, underscores the message, which appears aimed at women. \”Be a responsible parent,\’\’ says one caption, \”learn to protect your kids.\”

Another reads: \”Some politicians claim control over my rifle. Others, over my body. Don\’t I get a say?\”

The CCDL is one of several groups lobbying against stricter gun laws in Connecticut.

I can protect my home and kids with my handgun and my husband’s rifle. I don’t need the kind of assault weapon that only police or military personnel need. And I don’t need a 30 round magazine.

    1. Norm Scott

Really? And why do the police need weapons that are actually more powerful than the AR-15′s that are being discussed for banning? They have access to fully automatic machine gun type versions known as M-4′s and M-16′s.

Because, for example, the career criminals who invaded the Petit home in Cheshire were not as dangerous as the drunk drivers the police regularly face?

Also, the military regularly use the same kind of automatic machine gun type versions the police have access to, not the semi-auto rifles being discussed for banning.

Semi-automatic rifles that work exactly like the AR-15 types being proposed for banning have been legal for private ownership since before World War 1.

These new proposed laws are designed to have no effect on crime. The ultimate goal is banning all guns, handguns and rifles included. For example, the Virginia Tech shooter used only handguns and killed 32 and wounded 17 other. He didn’t need 30 round magazines. Lanza could have also done the same with handguns.

By banning only one kind of semi-automatic rifle, the slippery slope to banning all guns rolls onwards.

      1. The Conn-servative

Thank you. Why do the police need all the firepower that they have? The same hardware that many want the private citizenry to NOT own. If it’s good for the police,it’s good for me.I’ll surrender mine when the cops turn in theirs.

    2. Steve (CT)

Good for you, Jenna. Nobody’s telling you what you should buy for your own protection, but you can’t possibly know what everyone else needs as well. That’s what choice is all about, having the ability to get what you need for the job you have.

This retired state police officer disagrees about banning so called ‘assault weapons’:

    3. Mopar

Isn’t it great that you have a CHOICE, Jenna?
What kind of handgun do you have? What kind of rifle?
Did you know that virtually every modern handgun and rifle functions exactly the same as the AR-15? Did you know most of them can accept magazines larger then the 10 rounds they are planning to limit to? Did you know that the bullet a standard AR-15 shoots is one of the least powerful rifle bullets available?

That’s part of why it’s so popular with target shooters and women; the round it shoots is so low-powered it doesn’t “kick” so hard.
Chances are your husband’s rifle is far more powerful and deadly. Chances are also good your handgun holds more then 10rnds (most do) and will be banned.

If you passed all the permits and background checks, and store them safely, why shouldn’t you be able to use the tools you choose?

    4. Fake Thomas Jefferson

I need something at least close to what the bad guys have. That is why the AR-15 has been sold to the public since 1963.So we can defend ourselves. You can choose to defend yourself however you want. You can’t tell someone else how to protect their’s.

        1. Fake Thomas Jefferson

It is very true Bill. AR-15′s have been sold for over 50 years to the public. Semi-automatic rifles and pistols have been sold to the public for over 100 years. Those are the facts. What is new is that we let mental cases roam freely. We used to have facilities for these people. A rather large one was in Newtown. It was closed leeaving no place for people like the murdering criminal in Newtown to be put. That is what should be discussed, reopening facilities for these mentally ill people. Not firearms banning or magazine capcity’s.

          1. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

So what if I was arrested for soliciting in the men’s room. Like with my guns, once you taste it you always want more.

    5. Kim

Jenna: If I accidently kill innocent people while defending my home, so be it. It is not my intention to kill anyone unintentionally. But I won’t lose any sleep over it.

And I am a proud member of the NRA.

      1. bill katz

Kim: is this the kind of slander that wildbill is referring to? careful, he’s got a lawyer

      2. WHAT??????

“It is not my intention to kill anyone unintentionally.”

It is rare to read anything that makes LESS sense. Unless you are wildbill, I guess

    6. Kim Yes It is about Me

Last year, the poster, Kim, was also known as Kimmerian in the Hartford Courant threads at the end of articles. If you didn’t agree with him, he became aggressive and negative as he is now. At one point, he began a repetitive invitation to a leftist-leaning poster called “The Professor” to perform fellatio on him. This outrageous demand went on for days.

I finally drew on my nascent readings of Freudian psychology and composed a portrait of Kim relating this fixation to early childhood dysfunction and a lack of sufficient maternal bonding. After I expressed this theory, Kim stopped repeating his obnoxious request.

I contacted a psychology friend of mine and asked her about this profile I made of Kim. She told me that although there was insufficient information to determine the origins of this abnormal request, the prospect for being correct was quite good.

  2. Slruest

It is apparent that some people are unaware of the proposed legislation. This is not a ban on the AR-15, but a ban on all firearms holding more than 10 rounds. My Sig P250 compact is my home defense weapon and the only magazine it can accept is 13 rounds. Variations of the proposed CT law would make it impossible for me to buy a second magazine, impossible to sell it to a CT resident (through a FFL licensed dealer), and illegal to possess.

  3. Mopar

    “And I don’t need a 30 round magazine.”
And apparently, neither did Adam Lanza. The released info shows he fired 154 rounds from 10 magazines of 30 round capacity. That means he only fired an average of 15 bullets from each magazine before doing what’s called a “tactical reload”, something it appears he learned how to do from playing extremely realistic violent and graphic video games. So in essence he used 15rnd magazines.
Say you limited him to 10rnds. He carried 10 magazines, that’s still 100 bullets; almost 4 times the number he needed to kill 26 people. He could have carried 15 mags, then what?
10 bullets is safe, and 15 are OMG deadly?

  4. Mike

In 2009 & 2010 there were 70,000 people each year arrested under EXISTING FEDERAL GUN LAWS. In each year less than 100 of this criminals were prosecuted. From 2001 to 2007 in CT 27,000 people were arrested for violation of EXISTNG CT GUN LAWS. 71 percent were not prosecuted. In NY a man beat his grandmother to death with a claw hammer yet somehow was walking the streets to ambush first responders at a fire seen? These are facts! Yet we need more gun laws?

  5. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

Let me make this straight. The civilian AR15 is NOT an assault rifle. It is NOT the same as what police and military use. It IS a modern sporting rifle. Is not OK to have modern technology anymore? Should we all just crawl back into caves and become so ignorant as we all seem. How is this even an argument.

All these laws do is take away the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, and gives opportunity to criminals who I can guarantee you DO NOT CARE ONE BIT about your useless regulation written down in the books somewhere, to wreak havoc without anyone but the police to stop them. And don’t tell me the police is all we need. If that’s what you think, enjoy the next time your mugged at gunpoint and your only method of defense is to say “Excuse me, let me just call the police and wait for them to arrive first.” Thats your choice, but I’ll be choosing to defend myself with every right that I SHOULD have.

    1. Bill

That is what Kim was suggesting last year. you know, the Tea Party neo-conservative poster?

    2. Bill

      CT Democrat:

And you will notice that Kim doesn’t post under his name anymore because he is ashamed of his behavior. A true coward with anger management problems.

      1. Connecticut is Circling the Drain

That’s rich coming from you, the king of multiple personalities.

  7. Shaun

I have often wondered how the press would handle the Sandy Hook shooting if Dawn Hochsprung had been able to step back into her office, retrieve her personal firearm and shoot at Lanza before he had the chance to murder ANYONE at Sandy Hook elementary! As it stands all she was able to do was run at a maniac carrying multiple guns, flap her arms and yell don’t shoot; and we all know how well that turned out for her and those 25 others that were murdered by a madman!

      1. Shaun

Hey Bill, he was wearing a fishing vest. It might have stopped a bass but not a bullet. Also, simply firing at him stood a better then 50% chance of causing him to either flee or kill himself, this is per FBI statistics on people intent on committing mass murder.

    1. johngaltwhereru

      I could guess:

It would have been covered as cruelty towards a mentally handicapped person.

There would be musings and conjecture about the possibility that a less hostile educator could have reasoned with Lanza and avoided subjecting school children to such an act of violence.

The coverage would have been short. Big news on the day, then a little coverage when they decide whether or not to prosecute Hochsprung for possessing a firearm in a gun free school.

      1. Bill

johngalt: …oh come on… here is where you go off the deep end. but i understand sarcasm.

how many homeless cats run about in costa rica?

  8. Adam

This is an excellent ad. And it was not intended to appeal only to women. This ad is the only remaining option for gun-rights supporters if they want something on the air. Anything mentioning natural rights, statistics or constitutionality would be drown out by feverish screams of “How dare you oppose gun control?!? It’s for the children! All you NRA types are Heartless baby killing monsters!”

    1. Mr Hand

I will sue you if you try to plagiarize Mr. Bill! I will sue you if you are mean to me! I will sue you for doing anything that I do on a regular basis. I will sue you when I’m mad. I will sue you when I’m glad. I’ll threaten you with legal action and public exposure.

      Sue! Sue! SOOOOEEEEYYYYY!

I am a whiny little crybaby who doesn’t play well with others, and I stamp my feet and throw hissy fits if I don’t get my own way. Then I will complain to the Courant and shut down these horrible blogs that let anyone besides me call names or impersonate people.

      Who am I?

  9. enness

I hardly even know what to say…just that the same people who put the second amendment there also put “LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in there. And they make it sound like other states sell brides into arranged marriages or something. This woman isn’t so impressed.

  10. ace8888

Wildbill, Your first statement is TOTALLY INCORRECT! The whole point of the Bill of Rights was to state that citizens had these individual rights OVER the public and over the government. That is why our country was formed as a republic, not a true democracy. Sorry but you have a very incorrect understanding of our Constitution.

  11. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

How are they doing in Great Britain and Australia since that gun ban? Oh yeah, they BOTH went from an all time low in gun crime right before the ban, to an all time high since the ban. Why would you choose to be ignorant of this. Gun control clearly does nothing but make the crime rate worse. It is statistical FACT that as guns per capita increases, crime rate decreases. Don’t be such a fool.

  12. The Conn-servative

Billy, come on. The age old leftist argument: “Does that mean the 2nd gives you the right to own a tank,LAWS rocket, nuclear missile, etc.?” This garbage is so old,but repetitive lying eventually becomes truth doesn’t it? The 2nd refers to small arms,or that which an individual can carry and doesn’t shot an explosive projectile. And for the record, destructive devices(rockets, mines, etc.) CAN be legally possessed via ATF registration.

  13. Kim

“The terms “democracy” and “republic” are interchangeable in the modern era.”

To make such a ridiculous statement then follow it with accusations that OTHERS are guilty of ‘non-academic blather’ is the height of hypocrisy and ignorance

  14. wildbill

Well, I intend to change it to a democracy. How does that grab you?

The terms “democracy” and “republic” are interchangeable in the modern era. Stop reciting such non-academic blather.

  15. Kim

I have a right to walk down my street carrying my M-16 rifle. That’s right. I said M-16 rifle. And I dare anyone to try and take it away from me.

  16. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

The next time someone’s daughter is raped in the streets at gun point, I bet you’ll wish she had the concealed carry pistol to protect herself. And I don’t believe your guns laws did anything to take the gun out of her assailants hands did it?

  17. JohnKN

Do you really not realize that every single poll released has had a grand majority in favor of stricter gun control? We sound like idiots shouting in the streets if you bring that kind of ignorance to the debate. People like you are why they call us gun nuts instead of advocates.

  18. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

Adam Lanza also broke the law by murdering 27 people. A crime much worse than owning an illegal rifle. He was also mentally deranged. I don’t think firing your shotgun into the air was going to scare him any.

  19. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

The majority of imbeciles that now occupy what used to be a largely intelligent nation. You base ideas off absolutely no logic. Just opinions and publicity.

  20. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

Like the time he shot his friend while hunting? Great gun safety expert.

  21. Bill

Oh, and by the way Kim, if you or anyone else is using my real name to put words in my mouth that I didn’t say, which is called slander, i may just give my lawyer a call later today and ask about litigation against you. and my lawyer will be able to subpoena your identity from the Hartford Courant for a suit against you.

  22. Shaun

I have often wondered how the press would handle the Sandy Hook shooting if Dawn Hochsprung had been able to step back into her office, retrieve her personal firearm and shoot at Lanza before he had the chance to murder ANYONE at Sandy Hook elementary! 23. Bill

And Kim or who ever it is, if I am slandered again, I will most definitely call my attorney and you will need to hire a lawyer to defend yourself in a court of law. And that is a winning bet I will take to the bank.

  24. Kim

billyboy: This is rich! You’re having conversations with yourselves again – have you gone off the deep end?

  25. Kim

LMAO billyboy! Ya gotta luv the chutzpah of someone posting as ‘Kim’ for over a month, attacking his character repeatedly and putting words in his mouth, now threatening to sue himself for pretending to be ‘Bill Katz’. The irony is too much for me!

On another note, it makes me wonder how many bill katz there are in CT alone, let alone the world. You are losing it, dude

  26. Bill

With one exception. i am the only “bill katz’ that has posted here. and your name is not “kim.”

hey, if you want to waste money on legal fees, go for it.

  27. Bill

Kim, I am glad you responded to my warning. This signifies that you read my request. Thank you for reading it and publishing that you did indeed read it.

    Have a nice day.

  28. Bill

Kim: And I almost forgot to tell you that if I do indeed file papers to sue you, my lawyer will have subpena powers to identify you and guess what that means if your dull wit can bring you to this point. I will know your real name and any other data that is provided in a subpena report. And I will have no reluctance with publishing it in social networks as well as this little puny site.

Go ahead arsehole, make my day. You social misfit.

  29. Bill

Last but not least; i will complain to the Hartford Courant and request that these blogs are shut down.

  30. Shaun

Bill Katz, you’re an idiot! Stopping Lanza before he could kill any of them would have been MUCH KINDER TO THESE POOR CHILDREN!!

  31. billythesnitch

    I’ll call the cops.
    I’ll call my lawyer.
I’ll tell my pops and Diane Sawyer.

    I’ll call you names
    I’ll attack your style
    While acting the fool
    All the while

    I am the SNITCH!
You WILL comply! It’s my way or the highway!

  32. WhatIsHappeningToConnecticut

    billyboy;

How do you like it now? Remember, I’m a sociopath and my mommy never taught me anything about love and tenderness.

I have anger and I get a kick out of shooting my guns.

  33. Kim

whatishappening: thanks for resurrecting those billy quotes directed at me. Now THAT is slander
