Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy has taken a solid lead over Republican former wrestling executive Linda McMahon in the hotly competitive U.S. Senate race, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday morning.
The candidates had been running neck and neck for weeks but this is the second public poll that has given Murphy an edge. Last week, a University of Connecticut/Hartford Courant poll also showed Murphy with a 6-percentage point lead, though two other polls released this week suggest the race remains tight.
The Quinnipiac poll, conducted from Oct. 19-22, shows Murphy ahead, 49 to 43 percent.
“It’s déjà-vu all over again in the Connecticut Senate race,” said Q poll Director Douglas Schwartz. “As we hit the final stretch of the campaign, Linda McMahon is beginning to fade, just as she did in her 2010 run against Richard Blumenthal.”
Murphy is buoyed by women voters, who favor him 52 percent to 38 percent. In recent weeks, he has stepped up his attacks on McMahon, charging that she would not advocate for equal pay, access to contraception and abortion rights in the Senate, even though McMahon has said repeatedly she supports legalized abortion.
Older voters — those over 55 — are also trending toward the Democrat, the poll found. Democrats have been running ads alleging McMahon supports plans to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Murphy also gets a lift from President Obama, who continues to run strong in the state, leading Republican Mitt Romney, 55 to 41 percent.
“President Barack Obama is running stronger than Murphy in Connecticut, holding steady with a 14 point lead over Gov. Mitt Romney. The President’s coattails are helping Murphy,” Schwartz said.
The survey of 1,412 likely voters was conducted after the candidates held four televised debates.
Voters believe Murphy understands their economic problems better than McMahon, the poll found. However when asked what experience prepares a candidate to be a U.S. Senator, half said business experience was preferable; 39 percent said politics.
A sliver of good news for McMahon, who has made her 6-point jobs plan the cornerstone of her campaign: 48 percent of voters said she has better ideas on how to create jobs, compared with 38 percent who said Murphy does.
But there is also an ominous sign for McMahon: her favorability rating appears to be slipping. Forty one percent of voters view her favorably and 47 percent unfavorably; that’s down from a 45 – 41 percent positive in Quinnipiac’s Oct. 4 poll.
Voters have a mixed opinion of Murphy, with 39 percent favorable and 39 percent unfavorable. ”One of McMahon’s key strengths had been that voters liked her more than Murphy,” Schwartz said. “Voters are evenly divided on Murphy but have a net negative opinion of McMahon. After improving her image from two years ago, her favorability rating has fallen back to about where she was in 2010.”
The race remains unsettled: 11 percent of Murphy supporters and 14 percent of McMahon backers said they could change their minds.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Exactly. Murphy has not a single thought of his own. When you vote with your party 98% of the time for your entire career, it is safe to say you have no ability to think for yourself.
Makes me wonder what went wrong the other 2% of the time. Must have been something that Pelosi gave him permission to vote against. Must have been something that would have a negative effect on the 5th district, but Pelosi had plenty of votes without him.

I think this is right. As we saw in the last Congress, republicans were required to march lockstep with their leadership, which was quite conservative. They voted as a block. The leadership wanted to require women to undergo bogus ultrasound tests, and other such nonsense, before having an abortion. They eventually wanted to eliminate abortion rights altogether. Any republican, including Linda McMahon, if elected, would be required to go along with this leadership or be a total outcast from her party. She would be rendered completely ineffective as a member of congress if she didn’t march lockstep. I would that the voters of this state have enough sense not to deliver another republican vote to the tea party.

When you establish a program designed to provide benefits to those who live 4 years beyond average life expectancy, then society evolves to the point where the average person is eligible for Social Security for 13 years before they die, that is short-sighted and ignorant.
However, the biggest difference between Obamacare and Social Security/Medicare are that SS/Med passed with bipartisan support and followed the Constitution in that they were revenue raising bills that originated in the House. Murphy hasn’t represented the Hartford region because he wasn’t representing their interests before. He’s from the 5th Congressional district (that’s wetern CT for those of you that are geographically challenged) where he has been active in supporting our interests, and unlike most politicians makes an effort to listen and solicit our input at times other than elections. I’m not sure who I’ll vote for yet, but Murphy has been a good representative for us.

Linda McMahon is not in their clubhouse because that clubhouse wants people who only promote that party, not people who encourage citizens to establish their own businesses to obtain some personal wealth. I used to look to Republicans as the party of traditional values and proper moral behavior.
