Updated: DeLauro, Esty Slam 20-Week Abortion Bill in House

by Categorized: Abortion, Congress Date:

The U.S. House of Representatives gave approval Tuesday to a controversial abortion bill that would ban the procedure in almost all cases where the fetus is older than 20 weeks.

The measure cleared the House in a 228-196 vote Tuesday night, mostly along party lines. All five of Connecticut\’s representatives voted against it. As the Chamber took up the bill, both women in Connecticut\’s congressional delegation put out statements strongly condemning the legislation.

“It’s offensive and, frankly, sad that House GOP leaders are once again debating one of our most fundamental rights as women,” Esty said Tuesday. “This legislation is a direct challenge to our reproductive rights. It’s contemptuous towards women’s health. And, it is a tremendous waste of time when we have serious work to do.\”

Democratic President Barack Obama has said that he would veto the bill, if it passes Congress. That\’s seems unlikely as leaders in the Democrat-controlled Senate have also signaled their opposition to the measure.

“This blatantly unconstitutional legislation threatens the health and basic rights of women all over America,\” DeLauro said. \”Right now, we should be working to create jobs and grow the economy. Instead, here we are again with the Majority trying to insert their extreme and divisive ideological preferences into law.  This bill puts the federal government squarely between a woman and her doctor.

The Associated Press reports that 11 states have similar measures on their statute books.

  1. Connecticut is Circling the Drain

    That’s rich.

We wasted how many months on gun control legislation and now we have to get back to the business of jobs because this bill is being debated?

So, the party of compassion is miffed that we’re debating whether or not to murder 5 month old fully formed fetuses?

Its too bad the mothers of these shameful Congresswomen chose life for them.

I can’t wait to get the hell out of this libtardian hellhole. These people are beyond pathetic.

    1. The Conn-servative

Agree. It’s all about “women’s healthcare” and the “right” to choose. Don’t go to NY though and plan on that large soft drink. So much for your right to choose.Delauro, the hag of hags,my god.Give her a broom already.I ask you Rosa, how is it unconstitutional? Is it spelled out in any of our country’s pertinent documents? Other than Roe vs Wade, which is not in the constitution or bill of rights, how is this unconstitutional? What’s offensive Esty and Delauro is your treading on the Constitution, specifically the 2nd amendment, which is spelled out.How can you two in your conscience, say you’re for tighter gun control, presumably to reduce gun deaths, yet still tow the party line on this crap called ‘women’s healthcare’,which translated is infanticide?

    2. just you

Where is your party’s famous tolerance? Everyone else must be tolerant of your views I guess.

      1. Kim

liberals are killing the spirit of tolerance by continually assaulting freedoms granted by the constitution. You can’t have it both ways or all your way

      2. The Conn-servative

Just you,I presume you are addressing me and not the article. I believe and I could be wrong, but the party of tolerance garbage is really that of liberals. If you are so tolerant of others as your claim to fame, then please be tolerant of my intolerance. At least I have the kahonies to admit it.Your party, once honored the former grand wizard of the kkk, none other than,Robert ‘pretty, pretty, pretty’ Byrd. But that’s okay, because you’re liberals and the lame stream media doesn’t hold you to task on it.I subscribe to Dr. King’s belief in judging one by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.If you’re a weasel, worm, hypocrite,or a combination of them,I’ll call you out on it if need be.Some of your current leaders,Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, have been recorded in the past of making defamatory remarks towards particular groups of people, but the only place you hear about it is that mean, nasty, and biased Fox news.

        1. just you

Conn, you are allowed to be intolerant because some politicians are not tolerant? That your point?

  2. jschmidt

Guess the baby has no rights because they don’t vote or contribute to campaigns. ANd Dems claim there for the helpless.

    1. Kim

they don’t have traumatized parents riding around on Air Force One for the Democrats to parade around in order to pass secret bills in the dead of night to destroy our freedoms

      1. Kim

you don’t hear anything about the poor little faces of the aborted children from the hypocritical gun-haters. All they want to elicit sympathy for is what fosters and furthers their personal agenda

  3. Sharpshooter

Too bad the Courant didn’t mention how many children each of these esteemed legislators has…might put some perspective on the subject…

  4. will

Murder is not a right of being a female.. They have the right to say “NO” and keep their legs together.

  5. Richard

Women in America killed more children than were killed by men in all their wars. And it’s done so cowardly too! Delauro and Esty should be arrested for child abuse and hate crimes against humanity humanity when fostering genocide.

  6. Linda Dwyer

Women have the right to choose to engage in sex. Once that choice is made, they do NOT have a right to choose to murder the consequence.

  7. enness

I have fleeting moments in which I seriously consider disowning my gender. This is definitely one of them. These people make the same unbelievably stupid remarks again and again. If this bill had to do with the torture of animals I doubt it would be considered a waste of time. .

    1. enness

Hey, look! I didn’t expect to have my point illustrated so soon:

“Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy put his signature on nearly three dozen pieces of legislation that will now become part of state law, his office said Friday afternoon. …Some highlights from Friday’s batch of signings:

“…A ban, starting July 1, on dog owners tethering their dogs outside when officials have issued a weather advisory, such as for extreme heat or cold. Dog owners could be fined up to $500 if they tether their dog anywhere that the dog could potentially strangle or endanger itself. The law wouldn’t apply if a person is in the presence of the dog.”

Not a peep yet about how this is wasting our precious time!

  8. baborn3

Something of note: by recent Papal Decree (thank you Pope Francis), Catholic politicians, like DeLauro, who are pro-abortion, are barred from receiving Holy Communion in the Catholic Church.

  9. Tracey Kelly

God forgive me but I can’t think of one charitable thing to say to you or about you except that I will pray for your conversion.
