Democrat Chris Murphy Releases First TV Ad For U.S. Senate; Primary On August 14
The Courant’s Capitol bureau chief, Christopher P. Keating, reports:
U.S. Senate candidate Christopher Murphy is out with his first television ad, not long after his Democratic rival, Susan Bysiewicz, started broadcasting last week. Neither candidate mentions the other in the first round of positive commercials, which is the traditional operating mode for the start of a campaign.
Harsh, negative ads are usually saved for the final days of a bitter campaign. This year, that would be the days before the August 14 primary.
Murphy’s 30-second commercial will begin airing Monday across the state on cable and broadcast stations. The ad features Murphy’s wife, Cathy, and their two children as they are stopped by shoppers during a stroll through the supermarket. The various shoppers ask questions or make brief references about issues like women’s rights and jobs.
The first shopper to approach Murphy in the made-for-TV ad declares that she detests the partisan bickering that has become rampant in the halls of Congress. Murphy’s campaign has repeatedly touted that he leads the Center Aisle Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, a bipartisan group that attempts to reach solutions.
Another woman approaches later to comment about women’s rights.
“Chris has been a strong advocate for women and continues to fight to correct injustices that still exist in our society,” Murphy’s campaign says. “He has a strong record of fighting for affordable, quality healthcare, to protect a woman’s right to choose, against gender-based violence, and against economic inequality in the workplace.”
As the commercial begins, Cathy Murphy states, “Going shopping is a little different for our family.”
She continues, ”Chris ran for Congress because Washington had lost touch. They didn’t listen. So when we go to the store, we don’t get much shopping done.”
After the first woman asks about partisan bickering, a man askes, “How are you going to bring jobs back to Connecticut?”
Another man, who is an active Democrat, says, “Nice work on Buy American, Chris.”
Murphy, who won the Democratic Party’s endorsement at the convention, has opened a 30-point lead in the latest Quinnipiac University poll. The poll, released four weeks ago, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
Bysiewicz and Murphy will be debating on Sunday, July 22, at the Klein Memorial Auditorium in Bridgeport in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Hearst newspapers, and Cablevision.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face off in November against either Greenwich wrestling entrepreneur Linda McMahon or former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, who are battling in the Republican primary Aug. 14.

If the people were informed they would be throwing the produce at Murphy.
Blame Murphy for food inflation with his prevention of the key stone pipeline, support for regulations, and penchant to punish any business seeking a profit. With a record amount of people on food stamps, it’s no wonder he campaigns at the supermarket. He has many dependants.
If people believe that things are bad now, wait until Obamacare fully kicks in in 2014. You know, the so-called “Affordable” Care Act that Murphy enthusiastically supported?
With people like Chris Murphy supporting legislation that will raise healthcare costs, reduce the quality of care, limit access to critical care and end up destroying the best healthcare research in the world – who needs enemies?
Ladies and gentlemen: Meet Chris Murphy – destroyer of healthcare and destroyer of jobs.
Where did you get this misguided information? Sounds like it came straight from the FOX Republican News.
Great commercial, great Congressman and soon to be great Senator!
How can a Pro-Abortion commercial be considered “positive” by “Capital Watch”? I will bet if you asked the babies who were about to be aborted (if they could speak of course), they would not consider it “positive” from their viewpoint.
Nancy Johnson was good representative. It would be great if we had her in on the healthcare debate now. She knows the ins and outs better than anyone.
Murphy’s (a lawyer) claims of being “center of the isle” ring more than just a little bit hollow. He is a shrill partisan that voted for the Government Takeover of Healthcare. A real “center of the isle” guy would not have done that.
When did he ever buck his party and vote for a Republican bill or amendment?
Where is this guy on Partial Birth Abortion?
I’m not sure we can afford any more “rights”. You can’t satisfy unlimited desires (like the desire for health, education, a job and a vacation from the job) with resources that’ll always be limited.
This advertisement says absolutely NOTHING!!!! Murphy is a snake in the grass and did nothing that he said he would do when he got in Congress. Smarten up and forget about him. My vote is for Linda. The Democrats had their chance with Dodd and it was a horror.
