Democrat Dan Roberti again called for rival Chris Donovan to drop out of the fifth district congressional race in a statement Thursday:

“Today’s arrests of individuals connected to the corruption case swirling around Chris Donovan’s 5th District congressional campaign removes all doubt Mr. Donovan should end his bid for the Democratic Party’s nomination. Throughout this investigation, Mr. Donovan has hid behind lawyers and declined to tell voters what he knew and when he knew it. In a public-be-damned approach, Mr. Donovan has continued to promote himself as a viable candidate for a seat in the U.S. Congress. Seven indictments and a guilty plea hang over his damaged campaign. It is time for him to face facts. He needs to get out of the race now, as remaining a candidate does a disservice to the voters and to the Democratic Party, which must keep this seat.”

Democrat Elizabeth Esty, one of House Speaker Christopher Donovan’s two opponents in an Aug. 14 primary for the party’s 5th Congressional District nomination, issued this statement concerning Thursday’s indictment and the arrests of Donovan’s former campaign staffers:

“The details revealed in today’s Grand Jury indictment are extremely disturbing. The indictment not only describes activities that undermine the very integrity of our legislative and electoral processes, it places Speaker Donovan much closer to the alleged conspiracy involving his campaign. Every candidate is responsible for his or her own campaign, and I hope the Speaker will take responsibility for his. His failure to do so is undermining people’s faith in our electoral process at a time when we can least afford it.”

A spokesman for Esty said she is not calling on Donovan to drop out of the primary race.
