Out of prison and seeking redemption, Ernie Newton is locked in a three-way Democratic primary for his old state Senate seat in his hometown of Bridgeport.

He is facing off against the 76-year-old incumbent, Senator Ed Gomes, and state Rep. Andres Ayala in the August 14 contest. The candidates, including Newton, have all received public financing for their campaigns.

On Thursday, Newton spoke to more than 50 campaign supporters before they fanned out around the district to knock on doors and greet voters. More from Chris Keating, who shot this video at Newton’s campaign headquarters on Barnum Avenue in the Stratford section of the district, in the coming days.
