Gender Barrier To Be Broken in Groton

Two Groton-based Virginia Class Attacks Submarines, the USS Virginia and the USS Minnesota, will welcome female officers by Jan., 2015.

U.S. rep. Joe Courtney, whose district includes the Groton sub base, hailed the Tuesday\’s announcement by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

\”Today’s announcement reflects the outstanding performance of our female submariners,\’\’ Courtney said in a statement. \”Further integrating women into our submarine force is a welcome step forward and will ensure that the Navy can continue to maximize the skill and talent of all those seeking to serve our country.”

Six females officers – two supply corps and four nuclear-trained – will report aboard their submarines no later than January 2015, after completing nuclear submarine training requirements.

Mabus announced in January that he supported the integration of female sailors and Marines. \”The Navy has a long history of inclusion and integration and I am proud we have achieved another important milestone during my tenure as Secretary,\’\’ Mabus said in a statement at the time.
