The two Connecticut Republicans with excellent shots at election to Congress this year — Linda McMahon and Andrew Roraback — on Monday were quick to denounce the ignorant comments about rape and women by the GOP Senate nominee from Missouri.

These nervous Republican candidates promised, in effect, “we’re not like that.” But it’s unlikely the issue will go away in a year when Connecticut Republicans are trying to convince the state this is the year to take a chance on them.

2 Responses to Legitimate Rape And The Connecticut Republican

Right, I beleive these two Republicans. What Akins said is a GOP plank. They have tried to pass 3 bills that try to limit waht Rape means. If anyonew thinks these 2 will get to Congress and not support thier parties priorties they are mistaken.

First – Congressman Akin made a very unfortunate and stupid comment. Certainly, there is no such thing a “legitimate” rape. “No” means no, period. And certainly, all women have the legal right to anabortion – this right has affirmed by the US Supreme Court and is not going to change regardless of whomever wins the Missouri Senate race. So what was ar issue is whether the taxpayer should pay for unlimited abortion on demand, or whether we wish some limits on this funding. This is an active debate in Congress, where even the most pro-life Congressmen support abortion funding in some circumstances, generally where the life of the mother is at risk. many also support funding in cases of rape, and this is where Mr Akins tried to express his opinion. I believe his concern is that women would claim rape where there had been consensual sex, in order to obtain federaly funded abortions. Almost impossible to dispute the rape claim, so this could gut any limitations on tax payer funded abortions. Thus his unfortunate use of “legitimate”. Abortion remains a political minefield best avoided by politicians.
