Among the bluest of Congressional delegations, only U.S. Rep. John Larson took time to mark the death of liberal icon George McGovern Sunday. A former presidential candidate and U.S. Senator from South Dakota, McGovern was the World War II bomber pilot who tried to save us from Tricky Dick.

Here are Larson’s comments:

“Our nation lost a champion of the American dream with the passing of Senator George McGovern.

“A true humanitarian, Senator McGovern worked tirelessly for the greater good, and will always be remembered for his efforts to end the war in Vietnam.

“His career is a testament to both peace and to the importance of the American middle class, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

UPDATE: U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro has also put out a statement:

“George McGovern was a lion of American politics and will be greatly missed. For over a half-century, dating back to his appointment as Food for Peace Director in 1961, Senator McGovern was on the front lines in the battle against hunger. Senator McGovern’s conception of the McGovern-Dole Program in 2000 was emblematic of the leadership and dedication he showed on anti-hunger and poverty issues his entire career. I was honored to have received the George McGovern leadership award in 2009 and he was the inspiration for so much of what I have worked to accomplish.”

“In fact, many years ago I made phone calls for Senator McGovern’s presidential campaign from the basement of a building in New Haven with a dirt floor. He was an inspiration then and will always remain one.  I mourn his passing and my thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time.”

Where is the praise for George McGovern?
The man who fought the good fight. Where
is the praise for George McGovern? The
silence is deafening, the emptiness eerie.

Thank you, John Larson. Some of us remember.
