Moving quickly to quell a growing controversy, Linda and Vince McMahon have already begun making payments to creditors from her 1976 bankruptcy that will total several hundred thousand dollars.

Campaign manager Corry Bliss said Friday morning that the McMahons have already paid some individuals and are trying to find others listed on a 1976 bankruptcy document unearthed by The Day of New London newspaper.

“She is going to pay back every private individual,” Bliss said Friday. The payments will be for “what it’s worth in 2012 … We are going to factor in inflation.”

The McMahons, along with her campaign staff, have long maintained that there were no surviving documents listing which creditors weren’t paid in the couple’s million dollar bankruptcy in 1976. Bliss said as soon as The Day turned over a list of 26 creditors Linda McMahon made the decision to pay the old bills from the 1976 bankruptcy.

For months, McMahon has aggressively portrayed Chris Murphy, her Democratic opponent, as fiscally and professionally irresponsible. On Friday, Murphy spokesman Eli Zupnick said it’s McMahon who is not being transparent with voters.

“Even after this stunning and desperate late-night reversal by Linda McMahon, questions still remain. Voters deserve to know who she still owes, how she plans to pay them back, how much, and why she only now decided to make right on her debts,” Zupnick said Friday.

“Shouldn’t she have paid back the people she owed money to before going out and purchasing a power boat she named the ‘Sexy Bitch,’ a Vegas condo, a Boca condo, two Bentleys and an Aston Martin, three motorcycles, a $7 million Greenwich mansion, and much, much more with her hundreds of millions of dollars?”
