New Poll Shows Murphy’s Lead Is Expanding; McMahon Responds
Public Policy Polling, a Democrat-leaning poll, announced Wednesday that its latest data indicates that Democrat Chris Murphy is expanding his lead over Republican Linda McMahon in the U.S. Senate race.
The latest poll has Murphy beating McMahon by 6 percentage points. Last month, a Public Policy Polling poll had him leading by 4 percentage points.
The poll says 36 percent of voters say they have a favorable opinion of Murphy, while 44 percent say they have a negative one. Forty-two percent have a favorable opinion of McMahon, and 49 percent have a negative opinion of her.
The poll numbers also state that 54 percent of women voters support Murphy and 35 percent support McMahon. It says McMahon has the support of 49 percent of male voters. Of male voters, 41 percent Murphy.
“McMahon’s done a good job of hitting Murphy, but she hasn’t done anything to prop herself up in a race between an unpopular Democratic candidate and an unpopular Republican candidate, and in a state like Connecticut, the Democrat is going to win,” said Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling, in a prepared statement.
Both campaigns responded to the new poll numbers Wednesday.
“While all polls are just a snapshot in time, PPP’s newest findings in Connecticut’s U.S. Senate race must be noted for what they are: Democratic numbers from a Democratic polling firm,” said Corry Bliss, McMahon’s campaign manager. “In an effort to resurrect his failing campaign, Congressman Murphy’s Washington cronies have recently given him money, staffers, and now brand new poll results.”
Murphy’s campaign said the new poll comes as Murphy continues to focus on issues that are important to Connecticut’s middle class families while McMahon is focused on lies and attack ads.

Bliss is right. Numbers from the Secretary of State’s office show a breakdown of 37% dem, 21% rep and 42% unaffiliated or other. This poll used a base of 43% dem, 26% rep and 32% other. The reason for this breakdown, hidden in the poll is an advantage by 58% unaffiliated or other to McMahon over Murphy. To make Murphy look stronger they had to skew the numbers to really cut the unaffiliated lead for McMahon.
should say 51% advantage for McMahon.
It’s time to change plans. The mud slinging right from the start was offensive and disturbing. Those advising her are doing her no favor. And this is giving her the benefit of the doubt that this is not her idea, but that of the Republican State Chairman and the man hired as her campaign manager. The tone of the adds, and strategy is something that both of those men have used in the past, and if this is who she is trusting with her reputation, she is not a good judge of character. Fire them both, and stop allowing Labriola to act like the puppet master, he has never run a succesful campaign in his life. Even his election as the head of the state’s Republican Party was more like a game of musical chairs, and he won something that everyone else was feigning a desire to hold. Without the McMahon money, both Labriola and the RNCC would go bankrupt. Why is she paying his salary?
One more thing I have observed, where is her family? Why will she not allow them to be seen with her or is the opposite true, why do they abandon her when she is in this public battle? Is there really a family there, or are they just props?
Where is her family? Are you serious? Her family is tied to the WWE and the last thing she needs is more false charges of collusion between her campaign and the WWE.
Yeah, a democratic leaning poll shows fellow democrat Murphy the deadbeat leading. What a surprise.
Connecticut voters have realized that Linda McMahon wants to do away with Social Security! She’s a tea bagger and wants to get rid of all the entitlements that Democrats have fought to achieve for the last 3/4 of a century.
Why isn’t the Hartford Courant reporting on that?

“She’s a tea bagger and wants to get rid of all the entitlements that Democrats have fought to achieve for the last 3/4 of a century.”
The fact that you think your statement reflects what is best for this country, says it all. Proudly proclaiming ourselves to be the cultural equals of Greece, Spain, Portugal et al, gives rational people an accurate picture of where we have gone wrong of the last 3/4 of a century.
Got an EBT card, Victor? Just guessing
To be clear, I am against reducing or denying SS benefits to ANYONE who has paid into that fund throughout their lives. This is not an entitlement.
I AM against the massive and often fraudulent SS Disability payouts that have increased dramatically under this administration and previous administrations. SS should NOT be used as another form of welfare.
I AM in favor of modifying this program to reflect reality, including making it possible for younger people to opt out or phase out gradually if they are under a certain age. Along with that would have to be a clear understanding that if you don’t pay in, you don’t get benefits – PERIOD. Bleeding heart liberals don’t like that prospect, though
Thanks Victor. I had not seen that story.
She is a Republican but she has to repudiate many of their uglier ideas to run in a state where Obama may again win by more than a 20% margin. Kind of like a stealth Republican. It makes me wonder how she would vote under pressure by fellow Republicans to toe the line. Would she find a convenient excuse to escape her sugar-coated campaign promises and vote with them?
Murphy has a 36% favorability and he’s ahead by 6 points. Only in Ct. McMahon would be the best choice for Ct. Being in a blue state her votes will be what is best for Ct because otherwise it would be one and done for her. Very similiar to Scott Brown in Mass. Murphy would just another rubber stamp for the Democratic Socialist party with no thought to what is best for our country
Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics!
Murphy has displayed no concern in Ct.’s family issues,
from his negative performance record and ethical matters.
He has no plan for anything. He should be thankful to keep
collecting his $`170,000 salary, and quit drawing attention to his many liabilities. McMahon is not in it for the money, but for the concern and support for all Ct.
residents. Murpahy has no earmarks that would justify him for the Senate. Clearly, McMahon does and needs to be voted into Congress.
Demo leaning indeed. I wonder if the numbers are as tortured as Murphy’s explaination of his late rent, mortgages and taxes.
HELLO! So his late payments are worse than Linda’s late payments, and let’s see – she finally pays back her creditors after 26 years – isn’t that convenient? Funny how she tried to wear her bankruptcy as a badge of honor until she was caught redhanded calling the kettle black.
the ‘point’ is out there Morgan, if you wish to see it. You’ve apparently missed it altogether.
Face it, if the Democrat candidate were a convicted axe murderer, they’d be elected by a landslide in CT.
Must be the water.
Get serious. Murphy is in BIG trouble. Why do you thing he is begging Linda not to run attack ads. He can’t stand the truth. Remember HE wrote ObamaCare which EXCLUDES himself and this democratic pals from it.
Pete,
Please email so I can laugh when Murphy wins. Thankfully the people of CT are not as unintelligent as you. Murphy is a class act. he knows the only reason Linda McSCAM is running attack adds is because her brain is the size of a pea and she can’t talk intelligently about the issues. her staff gives her a paper with “talking points” on it to memorize because she has no depth or breath on the things that matter. And yes, Murphy was one of the authors of our health care law. I am now proud to say that my students will have health care coverage. One of the children in my class had step throat and Mom couldn’t take him to the doctor because she had no coverage. That little boy sufferecd for days, until our school nurse finally got involve. With the new health care that will not be allowed to happen. Do you have children?
here comes the name-calling and personal attacks instead of rational discourse. And surprise, surprise, it’s from a teacher no less.
And we wonder why we have the lowest scores in the country, what with the liberal/democratic ownership of the indoctrination centers we call ‘schools’.
And, as usual, you gotta love the reference to ‘talking points’ by a liberal who has generally offers nothing but. Except in this case of course, because talking points were replaced with the name-calling and personal attacks – also known as ‘the lack of a rational argument’
The Connecticut senate election isn’t just about out representation. It’s about removing the man who falsely claimed Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years. Removing the man who hasn’t brought forth an annual budget to a vote in over 1,100 days. Removing the man who wants to increase spending with another stimulus in order to reduce the deficit. It’s about removing Harry Reid.
As a woman, this time I’m gonna give McMahon a chance. It’s just not good to have ALL dems in CT’s congressional delegation. One-party rule is corrupt; we need some countering voice of moderation. And I like it that Linda McMahon, unlike the special-interest-funded Murphy, isn’t beholden to a bunch of banks and other financial lobbies because she has self-funded her campaign. Murphy? He already got a candy mortage from a bank under his regulatory authority. Enough of that corruption I say.
That’s why there is always gridlock and nothing gets accomplished you need to have the party in control of the Congress to be the same as the President so we can actually CHANGE THINGS instead of not acting on ideas. This election is about how we leave our country to the next generation. Do we really want to undo what FDR started, do we really want to have more soup kitchens and bread lines because McMahem/Romney aren’t going to care if you’re grand kids eat or not. McMahem wants the power for her own selfish interests. And Romney was born with a Silver spoon in his mouth who enjoys firing people and does not have a clue what it takes to run a country. I’m all for fiscal responsibility but not on the backs of the working poor, the elderly and the disabled because they are always the ones who suffer the most.
I hate to break it to you kathy, but YES we do what to undo what FDR started. You contradict yourself when you say ‘I’m all for fiscal responsibility’ while proclaiming your love for FDR programs.
Charity should be dealt with at the local level, not forced through government intervention. This is just another contradiction. With local administration of charity you might see a lot less corruption and a lot more DESERVING people getting help, instead of providing an ATM to the lazy, the addicted, the criminals, the baby factories, etc.
‘McMahon wants the power for her own selfish interests’ you state. I guess it’s safe to assume that you don’t find it selfish of Murphy to use his power and position to help himself through his irresponsible behavior that led to financial difficulties. Contradition number 3.
Your ‘government as nanny’ scenario doesn’t elevate the poor – it brings down the productive and the working people and forces them to suffer.
If you are a worker you must be experiencing less take-home pay like the rest of us. Your formula will continue this trend until YOU can’t afford to feed your family and pay for the roof over your head. Perhaps then you’ll feel elation over helping the poor? Somehow, I doubt it.
If you’re not a worker, then your position becomes much more clear – you want to continue getting your handouts and you want even more. This while using derogatory terms like ‘silver spoon’ to justify accusing others of being greedy or selfish.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! So that means that you think only billionaires should be able to run for public office because then they can’t be bought??? And countering voice of moderation? The party she will belong to, and have no say against, wants to refuse health care to women in cases of incest and rape. Obviously you don’t pay attention to the newspapers. Webster bank came out saying there was no special rate given to Murphy and the press has backed that up. As a matter of fact Webster bank talked about suing McMahon for her lies. I am a teacher and some of the boys in my classroom have reported going to the WWE wrestling shows. As a mother I am appalled at what they tell me has gone on, yet McMahon calls this “family friendly” TV. Please educate yourself before you vote.
morgan, as a teacher you are part of the reason for high taxes and the lowest SAT scores in the country. And if you educated yourself as you insist others do, you would know that your accusation of refusing health care to women in cases of incest and rape is a lie.
You would also know that you claim that ‘the press has backed that up’ is about as hollow a claim as can be used given the liberal slant of media, especially in CT.
Before YOU vote, consider the non-public sector taxpayers and how YOUR greed affects your neighbors. Think of it as something ‘for the children’
Linda McMahon is beholden to many many people. Here is why.
She ran a huge multinational corporation. She has contracts with dozens of banks around the world for millions of dollars. For payroll, receivables, cash reserves, to name only a few. What happens when proposed legislation affects these? Why hasn’t she put her assets into a blind trust?
The opportunities for large-scale corruption are mind-blowing. She never got a favor, never cut a deal, and owes nobody anything? Private money is secret and has *more* corruption potential than publicly disclosed funding. To get where she is she owes more people than you can count.
Did she borrow money for the campaign? From what banks? Why hasn’t she released a list of her debts?
After dropping $80 million on these elections she will be looking to fill that gaping hole in her bank book. The rich keep very close score on their money.
Connect the dots.
on the other side of the coin, we could vote for someone who we already KNOW is for sale and continue down the same path that has led this state ….. HERE!.
Your questions have merit. If what you ask is required by law, then she should follow the law. Otherwise, who cares?
more dots?
Hey folks, I just heard a great new name for Linda McMahon – Linda McSCAM – isn’t that what she does, try to scam people into thinking she’s something she’s not. My daughter, who is an independent, spoke with her a few weeks ago and was not impressed. She said McMahon could hardly talk intelligently on any issue, that she seemed to be using “talking points” someone had given her. My daughter was keeping an open mind, but after meeting Chris Murphy on the capital steps she now says she’ll vote for Murphy because he was really on top of all the questions she asked. I’m an independent, but already knew I’d vote for Murphy. Hopefully the rest of CT will see past McMahon’s commercials and realize how scary she is.
you’re an independent? Your posts don’t reflect that AT ALL. And thank you – now that your daughter has chimed in we can all take comfort in her choice.
Your posts are among the scams that I see on these threads, including your zeal to reelect someone who has already shown what he will do with his power and position. Thanks for helping drag down this state and this country with unclear, subjective liberal thinking
Just another taxpayer: Labriola doesn’t run the McMahon campaign. Jerry has negligble say or control over the Linda Team.
I’m beginning to think that these polls are conducted using Susan Bysiewicz’ illegal contact list
Murphy is out of touch with average folks if he defaults on his rent and mortgage until he is brought into court. Come on, the “average Joe” knows he has to pay his rent or mortgage each month! Is Mr Murphy above such affairs of the hoi polloi?
McMahon and her husband and others were granted bankruptcy some 40 years ago and were under no legal obligation to repay creditors. However, when she was called on it, she did repay anyway, multiplied by a factor of 4. It’s over, already!
I don’t like Murphy ads claiming that McMahon did not provide benefits for her wrestlers. Wrestlers, like stage performers, are free agents and pay their own benefits. They are not employees. This was discussed months ago. Leave it to the democrats to mislead us now.
How many jobs has Murphy ever created? Perhaps his staff, but any others? Somehow, McMahon’s being successful in business, bringing 600 jobs to Connecticut, is considered a liability. Huh? I thought success was good! Rich people create jobs. Poor people do not. You may not like it, but that’s the way it is.
Don
Don, how much lower do tax rates need to be before your rich people create enough jobs? Are these the rich that begged the too-big socialist government to give them a trillion dollars of public funds when their beloved free market turned against them and almost destroyed the country? How many jobs would have been lost if we just let them die as they deserved under basic laws of capitalism? No, back then, government interference was a good thing. They were happy to take evil tax money, some of that money provided by taxes on the poor. Now that the crisis is over they whine because taxes are a little high.
Mike, why would anyone want to invest their money into creating jobs when you don’t know from day to day what the tax situation is going to be, how many more regulations are going to be stuffed down your throat, how high the minimum wage is going to get, or what the effect and cost of Obamacare is going to be?
You probably think that the GM bailout saved jobs too, right? And that it isn’t costing the private sector taxpayers almost $30 billion for these ‘saved’ jobs? Those blinders you’re wearing fit quite nicely – congratulations, you’ve been indoctrinated.
But go ahead, let’s pretend it’s about the tax rates while you continue shilling for the mainstream media.
Don, McMahon’s smear TV ad says Murphy got a “sweetheart” deal and a “great” rate and in return he bailed out the bank with $400 million. So he helped the bank a lot. You might even say he saved that bank as the word “bailout” implies. So he gets credit for saving 3400 CT jobs. This is how many people that bank employs in CT. Maybe he does not get credit for all the jobs, but he has to have saved some jobs. Without the money wouldn’t the bank have to lay people off, or even fail as many banks did? Yes, even a failure is not a total loss of jobs. The bank would have been forced into some kind of merger with a stronger bank. But the FDIC would probably have to pony up even more government money to make depositors whole. A forced merger would almost certainly result in job losses as the bank would eliminate redundant jobs, and some jobs would migrate to that bank’s home state. So, in the end, can you really say helping that bank was a bad thing for CT jobs? Or that Murphy saved no jobs?
one word for you Mike when it comes to conflict of interest: RECUSE
