Amidst threats from Republicans to block gun legislation, gun control advocates in Newtown have announced their own filibuster plans. “Filibuster the Filibuster: Newtown Deserves A Vote” will take place in Washington D.C in Newtown. In traditional filibuster style, advocates will read the names of each person who has been killed with a gun since December 14–starting Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. and continuing until the vote on Thursday, which will determine whether or not debate on the legislation will move forward.
Several senators have announced plans to filibuster the Senate gun bill, eliciting an outcry from gun control advocates who have long been demanding an up or down vote to get members of Congress on the record to hold them accountable for their votes. Family members of victims and others in the Newtown community have traveled to Washington and taken to Twitter to lobby legislators.
“The goal of Filibuster the Filibuster is to build momentum to ensure that we get the 60 votes on Thursday morning to move the debate forward,” Newtown Action Alliance said in a statement.
