Newtown News, But Not In Connecticut
Police investigators are keeping a tight lid on the long investigation into the Dec. 14 Newtown school massacre. As state legislators debate the response to the attack, news about what actually happened continues to trickle out.
This week, New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica is out with a sensational column based on comments that a Connecticut state police investigator allegedly made at a briefing while attending a law enforcement conference in Louisiana. The Courant had already reported much of the news from the column, that shooter Adam Lanza has spent long hours studying mass killers, but the column added new details, describing an alleged spreadsheet that outlined mass murders of the past.
The question here shouldn’t be why is the media reporting this monumental story (despite the complaints of some state legislators). It’s why are we waiting for accurate, reliable data from state officials about the events of Dec. 14 as commissions and legislators are proposing serious, far-reaching changes in law and policy.
Should we mandate mental health screening for school children? Should we ban all guns capable of firing more than 10 rounds? Should we spend millions of tax dollars retrofitting schools to make them more secure?
Maybe the state police owe us some official details about what happened — before we change laws and spend a lot of the public’s money.

No maybe about it, the public is definitely owed these details, and soon too. If the CSP wants to brief the families or Newtown officials first, that’s understandable, but as soon as they’re done, they should call a press conference and make the details available to the public, lawmakers and the media. It makes me wonder about the motives or the capabilities (or both) of the CSP that this foot dragging goes on and is projected to continue not for days or weeks, but for months. Thanks Rick for raising an important issue.
Let’s learn the facts from that dreadful day first before enacting any new laws. The Governor’s and Legislature’s haste in demanding new gun laws before the report is even finished is just showing their true liberal, anti-second amendment colors.
No, there is no reason to wait. The gun killed very efficiently and it needs to be banned. We can always add to law after the findings are published. The NRA want the process to slow down so the emotions cool but they are mistaken on this point. Our emotions and our reasoning will not cool down. We want action now. We want action tomorrow. We want action forever.
I think George Wallace said something like that once about something else.
billyboy’s 12th personality has now come out
Appropriate name you have there.
I don’t agree with Senator Chris Murphy on many issues, but on this I’m happy to say I agree 100%. Maybe you’ve got to get to the US Senate before they start handing out SMART PILLS……to Democrats!

“…we have to pass the bill so you can, um, find out what’s in it.”
right kimjungsick: wouldn’t want to make decisions after passions cool down. Idiot
If most of the leaks are indeed true, then Wayne LaPierre’s complaints about violent games are true. 99.5% of all gamers are not going to shoot up the neighborhood, but disturbed people are going to respond to them. We shouldn’t ban games (i.e. First Amendment folks) but unstable people need to be isolated from them. We don’t want to do Soviet style psychiatric prisons, but just maybe making is easier for parents and courts to help treat them can’t hurt.
But the Sandy Hook Commission felt free to expound on gun control while deferring mental health issues to the summer. The whole thing is political. CT will lose an entire historic firearms industry, demonize law abiding citizens and accomplish nothing for public safety to promote Progressive politicians.
This reminds me of how the Stamford Police (Malloys Hometown) held back pressing charges against a Transgender who assaulted a girl in Stamford until a week after the Bathroom Bill was passed and signed by the Governor. If that assault was reported and made public when or around the time it occured the outcome of Beth Byes Bathroom bill would be very different. BTW the girl assaulted had disabilities. Glad the media and especially the Courant ispushing for the release of the report prior to the passage of many unconstitutional laws. Malloy has his hands all over the supression of the Lanza Report because he sees a bounty of revenue he can get from the forced registration of all guns with annual fees and other costs to gunowners. Remember if these laws are passed tthere will surely be an expansion of State Police and union beancounter state employees. Welcome to Connecticut, State Animal – The Weasel!!!
Comments like yours are going to cost this country more innocent lives than a hundred adam lanzas with an AR-15. As a matter of public record, in the hands of the dusturbed, good ole Fertilizer kills much more efficiently… Let’s ban it now before another OK city happens. Emotional reactions are never the right one. Well thought out RESPONSES are the only way to effect lasting and positive change.
That was towards Kim Jung in particular.

It is reprehensible that important information is being withheld from legislators and the public at large. How dare the Malloy administration block crucial details surrounding the Newtown shooting from being made public! I haven’t a doubt in my mind that Malloy knows what’s in that report and knows full well that it destroys his gun control argument… this si why he has most likely directed the information be kept under wraps until after anti-gun/citizens disarmament legislation is passed. CT surely should formally change it’s name to Corrupticut!
I may be wrong with this,if this NY Daily News article is true,I think that a judicially issued gag order should be mandated to all CSP on this case until the final report is out. I think even a internal affairs audit should be performed on the cop(s) involved. Did they make money on this presentation? Stop dragging the families of this horrible tragedy thru the mud with this “unofficial” stuff, whether fact or fiction at this point.
Truth is starting to see the light of day and it is exposing the Governors and Senators fairy tales for what they are, total exploitation of the tradgedy with the facts be dammed. Now it is coming out today that the guy in Florida wanted to out do the Newtown loon. Another pschyco all jacked up on some medication that is making them crazy and delusional. With this information now being exposed maybe we can move away from frivolous new regulations that have nothing to do with what happend except to advance a polictical agenda.
Rick, I once faulted you for being biased and not investigating the one party political system we have in Ct. You have asked important questions here, and I thank you. I was hoping that we as a society would question why we have prescribed ritalin and adderal to a generation of young boys. Have we created the mass murderers by pushing these addictive drugs? Drs. Are questioning these drugs now, why don’t we take our time and find real answers to these atrocities, instead of feel good legislation.
The full report will most likely be issued the day after the legislative session ends this summer.
Cant have pesky facts get in the way of lawmakings!
It is simple. If the truth got out they would not get the gun control they want so they have to cover it up or delay it until our rights are gone.
Per Thomas Sowell in a recent article discussing term limits:
“Recently, California’s Senator Dianne Feinstein gave a graphic demonstration of what can happen when you have been in office too long.
During a discussion of Senator Feinstein’s proposed legislation on gun control, Texas’ freshman Senator Ted Cruz quietly and politely asked “the senior Senator from California” whether she would treat the First Amendment and the Fourth Amendment the same way her gun control bill was treating the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms.
Senator Feinstein never addressed that question. Instead, she became testy and told Senator Cruz how long she had been in Congress and how much she knew. Watching her get up on her high horse to put him in his place, recalled the words of Cromwell to Members of Parliament: “You have sat too long for any good that you have been doing lately. … In the name of God, go!”"
By the way, Sowell is in favor of term limits insofar as a person should only be in government for ONE TERM – not a single term in multiple positions. The former might lead to good government. The latter leads to constant campaigning for the next position
A politician in California is trying to pass a law that would ban smoking IN YOUR OWN HOME.
NYC Mayor wants to ban large soft drinks.
This is how government works – take away your freedoms a little at a time.
For all you anti-gunners who are smokers and large soft drink drinkers: when they come after you to make you quit smoking in your own home, or on ANY OTHER ISSUE where your personal choices are threatened (and they WILL eventually), you’ll understand when gun owners aren’t there to defend or support you.
When they come after you for your religious beliefs – you’re on your own.
When they come after you for alcolhol consumption (again) – don’t come crying to NRA members.
When they increase their attack on your first amendment rights (ask Woodward about White House pressure on him) – please don’t speak to us about it or expect sympathy.
What goes around……you know the rest.
