Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is in Alaska today, talking about how state election authorities can prepare for natural disasters.

According to her office, Merrill and Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler are in charge of a group that resulted from the 2012 election response to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The group is slated to give a presentation about emergency preparedness and disaster response for elections at the National Association of Secretaries of State conference, which is being held in Anchorage.

The state officials from around the country will also talk about ways to shorten lines at polling places and about creating a National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 24 aimed at getting more people on the voting rolls.
