Minutes after 5th District Congressional candidate Chris Donovan’s new campaign manager, Tom Swam, wrapped up a press briefing Friday afternoon, one of Donovan’s Democratic opponents launched into a public critique of his rival.

“If these allegations are true about the finance director and the co-conspirators, it is one of the most reprehensible things that can happen in a campaign,” Dan Roberti of Kent, one of three people vying for the Democratic nomination for the open seat.

Roberti was referring to the arrest this week of Donovan’s finance director, who was charged engaging in a conspiracy to conceal the source of about $20,000 in campaign contributions, most of it to Donovan, the party-endorsed candidate for the Democratic nomination in the district.

Roberti criticized Donovan for not addressing the media. “Unfortunately we didn’t hear from Chris Donovan himself,” Roberti said. “I think that is really not good for his campaign or the Democratic party. I will always happy to talk to all of you. I am running for Congress because I believe we need to change the way things work…in Washington DC.”

Afterward, Donovan spokesman Gabe Rosenberg accused Roberti of playing politics.

“It is disappointing that Dan chose to play politics with an ongoing investigation, in which he knows full well that there has been no accusation of wrongdoing against Chris,” Rosenberg said. “This is political grandstanding at its worst.”

No Mr. Rosenberg, Tom Swan’s abortion of a press conference was political grandstanding at its worst. (Fmr.)Speaker Donovan is the embodiment of politics at its worst, and today he proved he is nothing more than a scared man-child who will avoid accountability at all costs.

  2. Well why in the world would this incident prohibit the Speaker from the nomination? We are after all talking about the Connecticut Democrats here. It’s not like they don’t have any minimum standards. Just look who they nominated to represent Bridgeport in the State Senate.

Look at who we got as Secretary of the State. Anyone but me remember that stunt Denise Merrill pulled with sneaking in a defeated bill (a rat) into the Budget and hoping no one would notice before it was too late? Her committee didn’t vote on it. As chairman she just stuck it in there in the middle of the night. She got caught but she kept her post as Budget Chairman and was promoted twice after that. Merrill doesn’t believe in Democracy but it is she that is counting the votes!

Our soon to be “Senior U.S. Senator” bragged that he was a Vietnam Veteran when actually he never left Connecticut.
People elected him anyway so what is the big deal about a few illegal donations and a teeny weensy FBI Investigation?
