UCONN Sets Up Newtown Scholarship

by Categorized: Newtown, UConn Date:

The University of Connecticut has announced the creation of the Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor those who perished in the Newtown school attack.

\"\"The scholarship will  provide financial aid for any students who currently attend Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as siblings of those killed in the assault and dependents of teachers and other adults who also lost their lives, who are accepted to attend the University in the future.

UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma and his wife, Kathy, have made an $80,000 lead gift to the fund.

“It is not easy to conceive of the most heartfelt and respectful way to respond in the wake of such a shattering event,” UConn president Susan Herbst said in a statement. “Yet Newtown is in our own state and many of our students and alumni have ties to those who are affected directly. The gift of higher education is a transformational one. We want the students of Sandy Hook to have the opportunity to study at a top public research university.”

Donations will be collected through the University of Connecticut Foundation to establish a fund in anticipation of supporting the Sandy Hook Elementary students enrolled in the K-4 grades today who will be of college age beginning in approximately 2021.

For siblings and dependents of those who died, funds will be immediately expendable to provide them with scholarship assistance at UConn as needed. All of the monies received will be spent solely for the fund’s purpose. If any funds remain once the needs of the groups above have been met, they will be used to benefit any future student from Newtown who attends UConn.

This is a wonderful gesture and I hope that the scholarship grows well beyond the initial donation from the Auriemmas. I was happy to give in memory of one of the beautiful children lost whose story has particularly struck me. It wasn’t much, but I hope it helps.

(Side note: Should this post be using the athletics logo instead of the academic one? I thought for a moment that this was an athletic scholarship…)

Where is Calhoun? He is making 3 mil this year NOT to coach. It is easy to lend your name to a charity why doesn’t he once put his money where his big mouth is?

Calhoun has donated plenty to charity and also runs a charity, you fathead. This isn’t the time for fools like you.

Mark, at this point in time do you find it necessary to throw unsubstantiated and inflammatory comments. You have no idea what Jim Calhoun is doing or has done… be it time or money for all charities. Pay attention to your own situation and if possible give what you can afford, if you want.
