City Opens Cooling Centers

Breaking: It’s hot out.

This just in from the city, which is opening its cooling centers June 25-26. That’s today and tomorrow:

With temperatures expected to be into the 90’s … City officials have ordered the opening of four cooling centers in the City of Hartford. Members of the Hartford Fire Department’s Special Services Unit will be disseminating water bottles on site. An air quality alert will also be in effect for the Hartford area due to high levels of ozone in the air. Residents are encouraged to take proper precautions including limiting outside activities, staying hydrated, wearing loose fitting clothing and taking time to check on neighbors, and friends who might be homebound.

The cooling centers and their hours are:

  • North End Senior Center, 80 Coventry Street, Time: 8:30am-5:00pm
  • South End Wellness Center, 830 Maple Avenue, Time: 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Parkville Senior Center, 11 New Park Avenue, Time: 8:30am-3:30pm
  • Hispanic Health Council, 175 Main Street, Time: 8:30am-4:00pm

Nearly all of those cooling centers have already closed for the day. People can also head inside the Hartford Public Library to cool down:

  • Downtown headquarters, 500 Main St.: 10:00AM to 8:00PM
  • Albany Branch, 1250 Albany Ave.: 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • Barbour Branch, 281 Barbour St.: 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • Campfield Branch, 30 Campfield Ave.: 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • Mark Twain Branch, 55 Forest St.: 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • Park Branch, 744 Park St.: 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • SANDS/Ropkins, 1750 Main St., 12:30PM to 5:30PM
  • Goodwin, 460 New Britain Ave.: 12:30PM to 7:30PM
  • Blue Hills Branch, 649 Blue Hills Ave.: 12:30PM to 7:30PM
