City Waiting On Feds For Permission To Release Subpoena

Officials on Friday released only a cover letter to a subpoena that was served on city hall for documents related to the relationship between city Treasurer Adam Cloud and Earl O’Garro Jr., the embattled CEO of Hybrid Insurance Group — the city’s insurance broker.

In an e-mail today, Deputy Corporation Counsel L. John Van Norden said he is waiting on federal investigators to see if his office can release the remainder of the subpoena, which would indicate what documents the feds are seeking.

From Van Norden:

“While our preference is always transparency, the U.S. Attorney’s office on Friday requested we not release the entire subpoena because it would interfere with the on-going investigation by the grand jury. We have requested confirmation from the U.S. Attorney’s office by 5pm today as to whether the subpoena is sealed or not.  If the subpoena is not sealed, it will be released in its entirety as we respect and appreciate the public’s significant interest in this matter.”

City Spokeswoman Maribel La Luz said regardless of the answer, the documents wouldn’t be released after business hours Tuesday. City hall would likely release them early Wednesday, she said.
