Officers from the city police department will be taking dinner orders at two downtown restaurants Thursday.

In the spirit of the holiday season, the department teamed up with DISH Bar and Grill and City Steam Brewery on Main Street to host Tip-A-Cop, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Connecticut. From 5 to 10 p.m., city officers will be waiting tables. All tips collected will be donated to the organization.

The fundraiser is part of a greater grassroots initiative called Law Enforcement Torch Run, which encourages police departments around the state to hold fundraisers to support Special Olympics Connecticut.

Over the summer, the Enfield Police Department hosted the Cop-on-Top fundraiser, during which an officer climbed onto the roof of Enfield Square to raise $5,000.

Connecticut officers will join athletes to carry the “Flame of Hope” during the organization’s Summer Games in June, 2014. The flame travels more than 500 miles through the state on its way to Southern Connecticut State University.

Special Olympics Connecticut supports over 13,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and their Unified Sports partners. For more information, visit the website: www.soct.org
