We’ve had a little string of polls showing Murphy with a six-point lead: The Q and this Rasmussen plus Murphy’s own poll-for-hire by the Gotham Research Group. (You can’t make too much of the last one, of course.) When polls line up like this…well it still could be a lot of things, but it makes you a little less worried about the margin for error.
So Murphy is ahead, but only in this one kind of snapshot.
And the storm has knocked everything off its moorings. It would seem to help Murphy if Fairfield County loses is election focus. But if Bridgeport is still FUBAR on Election Day, it may be difficult to turn anybody out in the Democratic stronghold. (And the dim prospect of an Obama visit is even dimmer.)
Another thing that could help McMahon was the intense TV-watching before the storm, which meant she got more eyeballs on her commercials, especially the new Magritte/”Golconda”-inspired Murphy clone ad. On the other hand, you can’t show commercials to people with no power or cable, right? (Last night Brian Williams was borderline-complaining to David Gregory about having to watch McMahon’s attack ads while the tense storm coverage was unfolding.)
I think the advantage is tipping sharply toward Murphy, but this election is in Rummyland. Lots of known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

I think McMahon’s non-stop, annoying TV commercials are hurting her at this point. Enough, already. We get it. We know she is rich enough to buy a boat load of TV time. She still has nothing to say. I can’t wait to vote for Murphy and help put an end to her four year, $100 million vanity driven attempt to buy a US Senate seat. Imagine all the good she could have done with that money. Imagine a $100 million McMahon college scholarship fund, for instance. Even today, $100 million could have gone a long way toward a truly lasting, socially valuable goal. Instead, it bought endless media time spent saying nothing and to pay legions of “consulatants”. What a waste.
Well said, BobD. Agreed. Sure, she ran ads to a large and focused audience during the storm, but that only served to draw attention to how clueless, out of touch, and very inappropriate she is. Can’t wait to see Murphy, who was actually working hard and helping people during the storm, win. “So, Mrs. McMahon, how does it feel to have just spent $100M and lose?”
Seriously, that money could have gone to such better use.
@Mary–
Hey, that $100 Million was her Bush tax cut, to spend however she wanted!
How did you spend yours?
