Monkey-typing
When people ask me about free lancing, I always say I work for editors, not magazines. If I trust them, I’ll stay forever. When they go, I do too. Etc.

That was my relationship with Val Frankel at Mademoiselle in the ’90s. I even took a contributing editorship there, turning down Cosmo in the process, because Val was the kind of editor who would protect you when the going got crazy. (Although it turns out she was having a much wilder time than I was.)

Anyway, she’s a bigshot author these days, and here’s her troubling, touching, inspiring essay in the Times today.
