Starting next week, the top amount a person who used to work at a job in Connecticut can collect in unemployment will be $591 weekly, up from $573 now. But people who are currently collecting will not see the bump, it’s only for those who lose jobs starting next week.

The maximum is only allowed to go up a maximum of $18 a year, and goes up as wages in manufacturing increase. From July 1, 2011 through the end of June 2012, the average manufacturing wage in the state was $1,046 weekly, a record high, and up 5 percent from the previous year.

For most people, unemployment benefits cover roughly half of what their wages had been before the layoff, but given the top amount is capped, that percentage drops for the best-paid people. The average unemployment check in the year that ended Aug. 31 was $308.

Unemployed people who had been supporting a spouse who doesn’t work or children do qualify for up to $75 in extra benefits, depending on the size of their family.
