The former Bernie’s headquarters and warehouse in Enfield has been sold for $5.2 million, two years after the appliance and electronics retailer filed for bankruptcy and closed its 15 stores.

White Plains, N.Y-based Baker Cos. acquired the 184,000-square-foot facility on King Street near I-91  from Bristol-Fields LLC, an investor based in Parkland, Fla. Bernie’s had formerly leased the space.

The property has been on the market for about a year and had been vacant until recently when 40,000 square feet was leased by Underwriters Laboratories, according to Jay Morris of O,R&L Commercial, which was the sole broker in the transaction.

“We see this highly visible location on I-91 as key component in our portfolio of properties,” said Philip King, vice president of acquisition at Baker Cos.

Baker Cos. owns and develops residential and commercial space in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metropolitan areas. Earlier this year, Baker’s residential division bought an upscale apartment complex in Middletown for $18.6 million, or $112,048 a square foot. The unit also owns the Townwalk apartment complex in Hamden and is the developer of residential subdivisions in Seymour and Danbury, according to Baker’s web site.

In Connecticut, Baker’s commercial holdings now include nearly 600,000 square feet of flex, industrial and office space, according the web site.

Colleen Sheridan also brokered the deal for O,R&L.
