A loss of public funds, a growing mountain of debt, a government audit and a series of failed real-estate deals have combined to create a financial crisis for the high-profile Institute for International Sport and it’s high-energy founder, West Hartford resident Dan Doyle.

The Institute, which put on last summer’s World Scholar-Athlete Games and World Youth Peace Summit at the University of Hartford, needs millions to regain its financial footing and recover from financial troubles that have led to foreclosures and a lawsuit over an unpaid loan. On top of that, Rhode Island officials want to know what happened to a $575,000 state grant they say was supposed to be used to construct a building that, years later, remains an empty shell.

Doyle says everything was done above-board, and he says the Institute will survive. In fact, he absolutely guarantees it.
