Rhode Island Audit Slams Institute for International Sport
An eagerly awaited report by auditors in Rhode Island concludes that the Institute for International Sport, led by Dan Doyle of West Hartford, cannot account for the majority of money given by the state for construction of a still-unfinished building at the University of Rhode Island.
In the audit, institute officials acknowledge the entire $575,000 grant has been spent. But only about $200,000 went for construction, and the nonprofit could only come up with $163,000 in cancelled checks to support that claim. No contracts or invoices were provided, according to the auditors. Read Amanda Falcone’s article here.
The audit comes a day after a Courant report on financial troubles at the high-profile nonprofit, known for its scholar-athlete games and, more recently, a number of peace initiatives.
