CT Forum, United Way, Cakes, Carousels Up For The Weekend
It’s a diverse list of choices around the Hartford area this weekend beginning with another in the Ct. Forum series.
”The World of Sports : It’s Beauty, Corruption and Power” begins Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Bushnell and features UConn stand-out and former professional basketball player Rebecca Lobo, ESPN show host Colin Cowherd, New York Times sports columnist William Rhoden and former New England Patriot Tedy Bruschi.
Among the topics to be discussed are the influence the institution of sports has on our lives, team allegiances, and the price of winning when it comes to illegal, unethical and unsportsmanlike behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and institutions. For information go to www.ctforum.org.
On Friday, head over to the Bond Ballroom in Hartford where the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut will be handing out it’s “Best of” awards. A diverse group of organizations, volunteers and individuals will be honored for their creative and productive efforts to raise money for the non-profit and the agencies it assists. It’s nearly Mardi Gras time and that means lots of Fat Tuesday parties. The New England Carousel Museum will resurrect its annual fundraiser Saturday at its Riverside Avenue location in Bristol. there will be masks, beads, live music, food and a cash bar. Masks and costumes are optional. The party begins at 7 p.m. and also includes dancing, a live auction, a tea cup raffle and the crowning of the king and queen of the Mardi Gras. Reality television stars from “Cake Boss: Next Great Baker” will be the featured guests at the Connecticut Cake Competition show this weekend at the Ct Convention Center.
Season 2 winner Marissa Lopez (for a Java interview go here (http://bit.ly/zWNK0p) and finalists Nadine Reibeling, Ryam Cimorelli and Carmelo Oquendo will attend a brunch on Sunday. the show open Saturday and continue through Sunday with cake competitions, workshops, demonstrations and an Evening of Sharing Saturday with celebrity chefs Burton Farnsworth and Vanessa Greeley.

And back to Mardi Gras. Lots of restaurants are having special Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday/Carnivale specials and then there is the five-day party to celebrate it all at Mohegan Sun.
Mohegan Sun’s Carnivale celebration begins at 9 p.m. Friday and continues through Tuesday along The Shops at Mohegan Sun concourse.
Sun’s celebration will include transformations of the concourse in keeping with the cultural themes. Friday night is a “Venetian’s Nights of Carnivale” with masks, gondoliers, stilt walkers and Harlequin models roaming the floors. There will also be a patio party at Todd English’s Tuscany.
On Sunday, it’s all about Rio and the celebration will continue with feathered dancers, samba bands and aerialists.
And on Tuesday, it’s a New Orleans Fat Tuesday celebration with a Bourbon Street Mardi Gras theme including jesters, jugglers and strolling musicians. At 9 p.m., there will be a king and queen featured at an indoor parade.
