As most area students return to school this week, 15-year-old Alexa Curtis, who was a student at E.O Smith High School until recently, has another trip in mind, one to New York City’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week which officially begins at Lincoln Center on Thursday. Curtis, who now is completing her high school diploma through an online program, is a self-proclaimed fashionista with a popular blog, alifeinthefashionlane.com and a plan to be a model in The Big Apple. Stylish and smart when it comes to pairing bargain priced designer pieces with bargain purchases, Curtis began attending the seasonal Fashion Week runway shows four years ago and each year has progressively been invited to more and more of the dozens of shows that this year feature 91 designers from 32 countries. She was on the Metro heading toward Manhattan and seven days of style when she called to Spill the Beans with Java.
Q: You are only 15. Do designers and their reps take you seriously?
A: Very. The first year I decided I wanted to go, I was only able to get invitations to a couple of shows. It was all so intimidating. But the more I write in my blog and for Huffington Post, Parade Magazine and a couple of others, the more invitations I receive. This year I have invitations to almost every show. Last year I even had a couple of front row seats. I think people who meet me think I am older than I really am.
Q: Who are your favorite designers?
A: Nanette Lepore. Rebecca Minkoff. BCBG. I have an older sister who was a model so I have bought some of her designer pieces. I also go to consignment stores. And then I pair them with things from Forever 21, Zara, H&M. I used to be pretty close minded about consignment shopping by my mom is a huge fan. Now I am more into it. And because of my blog, some designers send me pieces.
Q: I know people can follow you on your blog while you are at Fashion Week but while you are looking at everyone else, what will you be wearing?
A: A pair of overalls by River Island with a crop top underneath and black stilettos with silver heels. Street style.
Q: Is college, modeling and fashion your career plan?
A: I am not sure I want to straight to college. I love to travel and would like to do that and then write about it on my blog. I manage some social media for a few places now and think I would like to have my own public relations/marketing firm in New York City someday.
