Boys & Girls Club Throws A Club Kind Of Gala

boysclub (2)It was club time at the Connecticut Convention Center Thursday and we don’t mean the kind you dance at but rather the kind you play at, as in Boys & Girls of Hartford.

The non-profit held its annual “Opening The Door Gala” and it was a chance for the hundreds who attended to be a kid again, by playing games, dressing in costumes, and meeting new people, just like the kids at the club do.

For board member Spencer Sloan and wife, Mary Sloan, that meant a showdown game of “Minute To Win It,” a take on the popular tv show that challenges contestants to do some crazy task in 60 seconds or less.

boysclubFor the Sloans it was separating a pile of jelly beans by color and then getting them into cups as soon as possible.

Try as he might, a very intense Spencer Sloan just couldn’t beat his wife’s 30 second time.

Beyond the party atmosphere, there was a serious side to the evening, the induction of four people into its Hall of Fame.

boysclub (3)Among them was club alum Greg Davis, who has been a stalwart supporter and in doing so, has been a role model for his daughter and date for the evening, Greer Davis.

“I’m so proud of him,” said the 16-year-old who attends Loomis Chaffee School. “I am doing a lot of community service because I see what my dad has done.”

Also inducted were Trudi White, great, great-granddaughter of national club co-founder Mary Goodwin, and club alums Tom Burns and Dr. Morris Jackson.
