bradpartyAnd last but not least, WDRC personality Brad Davis turned 80 a couple of weeks ago and he was feted at Westchester Country Club in  Delray, Florida by near and dear friends from Newport, Connecticut and Florida including Art and Lena Aiello.

And setting the party mood was a former DRC’r, Dick Robinson, head of the CT. School of Broadcasting, and a guy who just launched a new radio station in Florida sd hr prepares for his own celebration of 60 years in the business.

But back to Brad.

“I have everything I want in life,” said Davis, a former television reporter and show host who eventually landed on the air with his own morning show on WDRC-AM. “But there is one thing I would still like to do,” the former U.S. Marine  mentioned while attending Haney’s party. “I’d like to skydive once.”

BeatlesAs the world prepares to mark the weekend’s 50th anniversary of the Beatles visit to New York City and appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” one former well-known Connecticut disc jockey is remembering it better than most of us.

Former WDRC personality and founder/chairman of the Ct School of Broadcasting, Dick “Dicky” Robinson (on the right holding microphone) , was one of a handful of select broadcasters invited to attend the Beatles’ press conference at the St. George Hotel in New York in 1964.

After the press conference, he also met privately with the Fab Four. Also shown in the picture taken that day are Ed Sullivan and his recording crew, Movie Tone News reps, and Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager, shown in the photo’s background.

Java Served Up At “The Season”

I love you Hartford and all that you do when it comes to raising money for causes by throwing lavish galas and parties.

But have to say, it was a whole different experience in Palm Beach, FL as its “season” began this past weekend. But still with some  Hartford ties.

Long story short, I was invited by  CT radio great, Dick Robinson, who, if you don’t know him, was a dj turned radio exec here in CT and is still a savvy radio and tv businessman who is wheeling and dealing from his home there these days. Robinson also owns the  Connecticut School of Broadcasting schools along the eastern seaboard and is also the brain behind “American Standards  by the Sea”, a two-hour internationally  syndicated  tv show and radio show broadcast each  week from his 70 ft. Hatteras motor  yacht – “Airwaves.”

“The Lady in Red” Gala”  (Lucien Capehart Photography of Trump, Pope, Leno and Robinson) was the “season’s” opening gala, held at  Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, complete with a guest list that included “The Donald”  himself, comic and talk show host Jay Leno, legendary comic Marty Allen and in the “what-a-small-world-category,” former Bushnell executive director Doug Evans.

Lois Pope, widow of National Enquirer founder Generoso Pope, and her “Lois Pope Life Center” hosted the gala that this year benefited the American Humane Association with Robinson and his wife, Sally, serving as co-chairs.

And while I was technically off the job couldn’t resist posing a few questions, learning along the way that Trump thinks the Courant is “a good paper” and Leno’s brother lives in Connecticut, and Evans, still keeps his hands in things in Connecticut by doing a segment each week on WDRC, and prepares to make yet another career move.

Thanks to the Robinsons, Helen, Craig, Kathy Faber, Rob Russell, and all of you. Too much fun!

For many, many years, Connecticut’s Dick Robinson has brought pianist Marvin Hamlisch into the Palm Beach charity circuit to perform at a variety of charity balls and galas from St. Jude to Juvenile Diabetes.  Robinson, founder of the 501©3, the Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook, said Hamlisch was to be honored at the Society’s fund-raising event for the 2013-2014 Palm Beach Season.
