Quinnipiac To Honor Barbara Walters With Friendly Award

Iconic broadcast journalist Barbara Walters will be honored by Quinnipiac University with a 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award.

An Evening With Barbara WaltersWalters, an ABC news correspondent, executive producer and co-host of “The View” will be presented with the award on June 10 at the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award Luncheon at the  Metropolitan Club in New York City.

The Fred Friendly Award is presented each year to a broadcast journalist whose work reflects the ideals of Fred Friendly, former president of CBS  News and a strong advocate of freedom of speech and of the press.

Past recipients  of the Fred Friendly Award include Dan Rather, Lesley Stahl, Morley Safer, Scott Pelley and Gwen Ifill.

This the second time the lifetime achievement award is being presented. In 2008 Floyd Abrams was honored with the lifetime achievement award. 

Spring Has Sprung…Get Out There Hartford!

 It all starts Thursday at the Hartford Hilton where singer and tv personality Vikki Carr will be the featured guest at the 10th annual “Latinas & Power Symposium.”

More than 500 Latinas are expected at the lunch and business expo that includes seminars and networking. Information: emsbusiness.com

lipitonesAlso on Thursday, The Goodspeed’s Norma Terris Theatre opens its first production of the season,  “The Lipitones ” the tale of a “not so traditional barbershop quartet.”  The show, part of Goodspeed’s 50th anniversary celebration,  continues through June 2 at the Chester theater. The Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services will hold its 30th anniversary gala Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Governor’s Residence, 990 Prospect Ave., Hartford . First Lady Cathy Malloy will be the host committee chairwoman for the event benefiting the statewide coalition of individual sexual assault crisis programs. Information: connsacs.org 

On Friday from 6 to 9p.m. , head to St. Thomas Seminary, 467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, for the “Taste of the World” a benefit for Immaculate Conception Shelter & Housing Corp. scott-pelley[1]Also on Friday, Quinnipiac University will present is 20th Fred Friendly First Amendment Award to CBS evening news anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley at the Metropolitan Club in New York City.

The award is given each year to a person “who has shown courage and forthrightness in preserving the rights set forth in the First Amendment.” The award is named after Fred Friendly, a former CBS News president and champion of freedom of speech. Information: quinnipiac.edu

lundenIt’s Mother’s Day weekend and that means it is “Race In the Park ” day Saturday at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain. It is the 10th anniversary for the 5K race and walk to raise money for breast cancer research, services  and programming. Held rain or shine, the day also feature food, displays and a survivor’s brunch that this year will feature Joan Lunden as the guest speaker. Information: ctraceinthepark.org

Also on Saturday, the JDRF will hold its annual “Promise Ball” at the Connecticut Convention Center. Ball honorees are Stanley Black & Decker CEO John Lundgren and Yale University professor Dr. Kevan C. Herold. Theme for this year’s event is “Building Toward A Cure” with proceeds benefiting  juvenile diabetes research and programming.

Held in a tent on the town hall green, The evening, themed “Lights, Camera,  Hollywood,” will include food, music, and dancing . CBS Pelley To Receive QU Fred Friendly Award

scott-pelley[1]Scott Pelley, anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley has been named the recipient of the 20th annual Fred Friendly First Amendment Award.

Presented each year by Quinnipiac University’s School of Communications, the award will be presented in New York in May.

The award is in memory of the late Fred Friendly, who was president of CBS, an author, director and producer, who played a major role in establishing PBS and was a champion of freedom of speech.

The award-winning Pelley also worked as correspondent for the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes, and was a CBS News’ Chief White House Correspondent.

The school presents the award each year to those “who have shown courage and forthrightness in preserving the rights set forth in the First Amendment.”

Past award winners have included Tom Brokaw, Bill Moyers, Gwen Ifill, Peter Jennings and Ted Koppel.
