Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters Celebrate

Friday was a special night for Liberty Bank CEO/president Chandler Howard. He was being honored for his support of Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters as its “Start Something Big” gala chair.

But it was also a bit of a personal “special” night as well. It was the first big public event that Howard attended with his new bride, Miriam.

Howard and the former Miriam Lopez were married a few months ago, honeymooned in Cabo San Lucas and had a busy weekend ahead of them as they and the rest of the crowd celebrated at The Hartford Golf Club.

They have a new home in Farmington.

“Yep, tomorrow, we move tomorrow,” said a beaming Mrs. Howard who announced that so far so good when it comes to newlywed life.

But like any new couple, the two are finding out some things they didn’t know about each other.

“He refuses to eat leftovers,” said Mrs. Howard about her husband’s aversion to “old food.”

“She likes to take four showers a day,” he said about what he feels is one of his new wife’ quirks.

Also honored at the gala was Marvin Woodward who was presented the Big Brother of the Year Award.

And then there was talk of a new initiative.

Hill-Stead Museum is now giving Big Brother and Sisters, mentors, and their “littles” (the children they are paired within the program) free admission to the Farmington showplace and its extensive programming, according to museum director, Sue Sturtevant, who attended the gala.

“We thought it was a fantastic idea,” said BBBS CEO/president Andy Fleischmann, who, by the way, easily won reelection to the state legislature last week.
