erinbShe may not have brought home the Miss Universe crown, but Glastonbury resident and Miss USA, Erin Brady did the state and the nation proud at the pageant in Moscow Saturday.

While the crown went to Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler, Brady was no slouch making it to the final 10 in the international competition.

And what now for the insurance accountant-turned-beauty queen?

“I go back to New York and happily serve my term as Miss USA,” she said. “This has all been an experience of a life time.”

calendar_clip_art-1.29213820_std[1]It could be a bit of a tricky weekend when it comes to your schedule what with a slew of galas, the Miss Universe contest with Connecticut’s own Erin Brady in the running and a really poignant dance contest that is a perfect fit for Veterans Day.

Dan Lauria, best known for his role as the father in the former tv series “The Wonder Years” will be  at the Mark Twain House & Museum Thursday at  6 p.m. for a special free program. The Broadway star will discuss his career and his new children’s book, “The Blue Hair Club & Other Stories.” Lauria is in town because he is one of the stars in the upcoming Bushnell production of “A Christmas Story,” opening next week.

Things really get going on  Saturday night with several galas.

Themercy Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation presents its 19th annual  “Dreams Can Come True Gala” at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The evening includes live and silent auctions, dinner and dancing with proceeds used for Mercy’s efforts to meet the needs of the area’s homeless.  More information here.

Or you could head over to the Hartford/Windsor Marriott  where HARC will hold its 25th annual “The Silver Screen” gala and auction. HARC provides services for people with intellectual and related disabilities.

The evening includes dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Hosts will be radio personalitydancing Ray Dunaway and tv personality Brad Drazen. Guests are invited to dress as their favorite star or character or, in the spirit of the silver anniversary, anything silver. For more information go here.

Also on Saturday, “STARS An Evening of Celebration” will be held at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield. Proceeds from the evening will support the Intensive Education Academy Inc. The academy provides education to students with autism, developmental delay and other related disabilities.

Auction emcees are tv personality Scot Haney and radio personality Brad Davis.

Now in berinbetween dancing and winning auctions, you can tune into NBC and catch the Miss Universe Pageant from Moscow. While you may usually skip over such programs, this year is special for Connecticut because among the contestants is South Glastonbury’s Erin Brady, who won the Miss USA competition here and is now representing our country at the international pageant.

It’s Veteran’s Day weekend folks and hopefully, no need to say anything except take a moment and be grateful to the military men and women who stepped up on behalf of this country’s freedom.

But on Sunday at the Connecticut Convention Center, there will be new twist that will ultimately benefit Fisher House Connecticut, part of the  foundation that provides free, long-term housing near military hospitals so that families of seriously ill soldiers have a place to stay while there loved one recuperates.

“Ddancingancing with Our Heroes Gala” is being sponsored by the 19 Fred Astaire Dance Studios of New England. The goal is to raise $200,000  for the Connecticut facility to be built near the VA Healthcare System in West Haven.

The dance competition will feature couples made up of military heroes and their professional dance partners. Dinner, dancing and a silent auction will also be featured.

usaShe did it. South Glastonbury resident and CCSU grad Erin Brady won Miss USA Sunday night in Las Vegas. Goes to show you can have brains, beauty and live in CT and be a pageant winner. First CT win in Miss USA!! On to Miss Universe. Congratulations!

Wikipedia immediately updated its Portland, Ct. entry Monday. The “Notable People” portion now includes :

Erin Brady (1987-), Miss Connecticut 2013, Miss USA 2013, grew up in town and went to Portland Public Schools”

On the Miss USA website, it states Brady holds a degree in finance with a minor in criminal justice. She is a financial accountant for Prudential Retirement in Hartford , where “she works behind the scenes by running the controls that ensure every member of her team has performed their work correctly and efficiently,” it notes. The site also states Brady plans to pursue an MBA in the near future and hopes to get involved with Pension Risk Transfers.

“Erin was raised in a home heavily influenced by alcohol and substance abuse and she sadly remembers the lack of support and places to turn to for the children of addicts, such as her,” it states. ” She has since learned that more than half of adult addicts are children of alcoholics. It is her goal to help break the cycle of addiction as she plans to be an advocate for children of alcohol and substance abuse.”

The Miss USA website also notes Brady has helped with the Ferrari and Friends Concorso, which works closely with the Children’s Medical Hospital and the “Make-A-Wish Foundation”; Susan G. Komen, Walk for The Cure events; and, Habitat for Humanity as her charities of choice.

By the way, love the fact that another CT first was there at the pageant. Miss Teen USA, Southington resident Logan West was on stage for the crowning.

And one other fun fact…it has been 80 years since CT had a national winner. Former New Haven resident Marion Bergeron won the Miss America crown in 1933.
