As most area students return to school this week, 15-year-old Alexa Curtis, who was a student at E.O Smith High School until recently, has another trip in mind, one to New York City’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week which officially begins at Lincoln Center on Thursday.  Curtis, who now is completing her high school diploma through an online program, is a self-proclaimed fashionista with a popular blog, alifeinthefashionlane.com and a plan to be a model in The Big Apple. Stylish and smart when it comes to pairing bargain priced designer pieces with bargain purchases, Curtis began attending the seasonal Fashion Week runway shows four years ago and each year has progressively been invited to more and more of the dozens of shows that this year feature 91 designers from 32 countries. She was on the Metro heading toward Manhattan and seven days of style when she called to Spill the Beans with Java.

Q: You are only 15. Do designers and their reps take you seriously?

A: Very. The first year I decided I wanted to go, I was only able to get invitations to a couple of shows. It was all so intimidating.  But the more I write in my blog and for Huffington Post, Parade Magazine and a couple of others, the more invitations I receive. This year I have invitations to almost every show. Last year I even had a couple of front row seats. I think people who meet me think I am older than I really am.

Q: Who are your favorite designers?

A: Nanette Lepore. Rebecca Minkoff. BCBG. I have an older sister who was a model so I have bought some of her designer pieces. I also go to consignment stores. And then I pair them with things from Forever 21, Zara, H&M. I used to be pretty close minded about consignment shopping by my mom is a huge fan. Now I am more into it. And because of my blog, some designers send me pieces.

Q: I know people can follow you on your blog while you are at Fashion Week but while you are looking at everyone else, what will you be wearing?

A: A pair of overalls by River Island with a crop top underneath and black stilettos with silver heels. Street style.

Q: Is college, modeling and fashion your career plan?

A: I am not sure I want to straight to college. I love to travel and would like to do that and then write about it on my blog. I manage some social media for a few places now and think I would like to have my own public relations/marketing firm in New York City someday.

CT Woman Hits The NYC Runway For Heart Health Month

Cindy_Parsons_AFTER_110412_OgilvyCindy_Parsons_Before_033112_Ogilvy (2)When the very popular, celebrity-studded “Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Fashion Show” show kicks off at Manhattans Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom Wednesday, Feb. 6, among those who will be strutting down the catwalk will be a Danielson businesswoman who turned her own heart health around.

Cindy Parsons, who owns the Trink-et Shoppe in Danielson, will be flaunting a new body, a new attitude and a new designer dress as the runway representative for 140 women from the state’s northeast corner who successfully completed the “Follow the Fifty: Models of Heart Health” campaign here.

Parsons lost 77 pounds and lowered her blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index as part of the one-year, nationally funded regional program that began here in February, 2012. Those arranging the New York City fashion show to highlight Heart Health Month were so impressed with the results from the campaign (coordinated by the state’s Northeast District Department of Health with the HealthQuest Northeast Connecticut Coalition) that they invited five of the women to be part of the audience at the show.

Local program organizers however, couldn’t choose just five to attend given everyone’s success, so Heart Truth invited the whole group to the fashion show. Parsons was invited to model in the show because of her exemplary commitment and efforts on behalf of others in the program.

On Wednesday the heart healthy Connecticut women will be dressed to the nines in red dresses, boarding buses for the Big Apple show where they will cheer Parsons on.

Parsons was in New York City Wednesday being fitted for her designer dress for the show. Among those modeling with her are fitness guru Jillian Michaels, Olympic star Gabby Douglas, the Today’s Show Savannah Guthrie and singer Toni Braxton.

Among the designers who have participated in the 11-year-old fashion show are Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Nicole Miller, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta and Narciso Rodriguez.
