QU Names New Journalism Chair, Leno To SCSU

Convey, KevinA guy with hands-on news experience has a new job with the Department of Journalism at Quinnipiac University.

Newspaper veteran Kevin R. Convey, a former editor-in-chief at the New York Daily News, has been named department chair of the school in Hamden.

Convey, of Brockton, Mass. and New York City, was a journalist for three decades, working his way up from reporter to editor-in-chief at the Boston Herald and then serving as editor-in-chief of the Daily News in New York.

“Kevin has an outstanding record of achievement as a journalist,” said Lee Kamlet, dean of the School of Communications. “His deep experience has given him a very clear idea of where journalism and journalism education ought to be going.”

Convey will also be an assistant professor at the school.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Quinnipiac’s talented students, accomplished faculty and forward-thinking administration,” he said.

Convey earned a master’s degree in entrepreneurial journalism from the Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York and is an adjunct professor at both New York University and The City College of New York.spyros

Speaking of people in the news and providing the news…

Brian Spyros is the new guys at WTNH News 8 in New Haven. A graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Spyros worked at WFSB and WBOC in Maryland.

At NBC Connecticut, it’s goodbye to Stephania Jimenez who has taken a new job as an anchor at KZTV in Corpus Christi, Texas.

And for those of you mourning the loss of Jay Leno from late night television, you can catch him at Southern Connecticut State University in May.

Leno, who was replaced by Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” earlier this year, will be the guest speaker at Southern Connecticut State University on May 9 at its annual Fusco Distinlenoguished Lecture Series.

Tickets begin at $30 for students and go to $150 for VIP seats that also include a post-reception meet –and-greet with Leno. For information go here.

And finally, you may remember Project Runway winner Mondo Guerra visit here last fall when he was the celebrity judge at AIDS CT first annual “We Can: An Evening with Mondo Guerra, ”  a Project Runway “ fashion fundraiser here.

It featured a slew of area designers including Jean Anne Boccaccio who won the competition that night.

The real reality show that airs on Lifetime Channel, is having amondo1 casting call for next season, inviting “hot fashion designers” who want to who their work on the runways of New York City’s Fashion Week to audition for the show.

Mondo Struts His Stuff At AIDS CT Show

 mondo1Celebrity designer and Project Runway all-Stars winner Mondo Guerra brought his fashion sense and his commitment to a cause to Hartford Saturday where he served as celebrity judge for the AIDS CT “We Can” version of “Project Runway.”

Guerra, decked out in a self-designed black and white silk suit, was not only interested in judging the creations of 22 area designers who participated in the fundraiser at New Country Motor Cars in Hartford, but also to bring awareness to the AIDS virus.

“I want to use my celebrity as an advocate,” said the very personable and very accommodating Guerra who revealed his HIV-positive status on season eight of “Project Runway” season eight. “I do a lot of fundraisers that are helping to promote awareness and education,” said Guerra who posed for pictures with those at the event. “And I go to high schools and colleges to talk to students, he added.” I think that is so important too.”

But beyond that, it was all about the clothes and Mondo called the show “cute,” adding however that it was one of the best-run fundraising fashion shows he had ever attended.

“I want to see color,” he said as he prepared to judge designs with fellow judges Sage Steele, Colin McEnroe,mondo2 Debbie Wright, Ricky Trendy and Java. “I want to see something a bit avant garde,” said Guerra who besides his own clothing line is now also promoting a new eyeglass frame line as well as serving as an audition judge on Project Runway. “You can never set the bar too high.”

Setting the emcee bar high was the always entertaining Jacques Lamarre who was off duty from the Mark Twain House & Museum. Raising cash during the auction that was part of the evening was master money maker John Motley.

And when it came to the winners, they were clothes Guerra pronounced impressive. Third place winner was Salvatore “Joe” Gianni  while second place went to Nigel Ramsay. First place winner, who won a Mondo-autographed sewing machine, was Jean Anne Boccaccio, who, by the way, had sister Maryanne McLafferty as her model.

Lauren “Dylan’s Candy Bar” Opens At Mohegan Friday

Have a high-end sweet tooth? Are you a “Project Runway” fan who saw exactly what kind of couture can be created with candy?

Head to Mohegan Sun Friday when Dylan Lauren, daughter of designer Ralph Lauren, opens another one of her candy stores, her first  in Connecticut .

The celebrity candy shop, called Dylan’s Candy Bar,  opens at 11 a.m. and is located at Casino of the Sky in the space that was formerly Lalo Treasures.  The store will be home to 5,000 types candies including 300 types of bulk candy, novelty and nostalgic candy and candy inspired clothing and jewelry. The candy store has locations in New York City,  Houston, Los Angeles and Miami.

To make the Connecticut opening a little “sweeter”, the first 100 guests to make a purchase will receive a free gift: choice of either a round lollipop or piece of chocolate!
