The Village Hosts Women’s Luncheon

She may be best known for her role as Dru Winters in the CBS daytime soap “The Young and the Restless,” but actress/author/philanthropist Victoria Rowell was serious business at Friday’s “The Girl Within Luncheon” at the Hartford Marriott Downtown.
As a former foster child who wrote the bestseller “The Women Who Raised Me,” she had a message for the audience, young girls need to be empowered.
“They need to protect themselves from predators,” she said, during a VIP meet-and-greet before the luncheon sponsored by The Village. “Gender racism, inequality in jobs and salaries, incest, abuse are all insults to young women,” she said. “There has to be more education.”
Rowell, who also played medical examiner/pathologist Dr. Amanda Bentley on the CBS drama Diagnosis: Murder, will be on an episode of “Law and Order” this week and who has a new book coming out in 2013, was not the only celeb in the room.
Sallie Norris, who co-chaired the lunch with Joanne Eudy, also found herself in the spotlight.
Norris was named “Woman of the Year” by The Village.
“I lost a daughter many years ago and decided to get involved with The Village to honor her,” said Norris, who was humble about her volunteer efforts. “I could do nothing to help her after her death but I could do something for others.”
Eastern CT State University’s Women’s Center director Starsheemar Byrum brought several students from the school, emphasizing that the more people talk about women’s issues the more will be done to make women stronger.
“Women still need to learn how to use their voice and how to be empowered,” she said. “Programs like this are an opportunity to gain awareness.”
