‘Go Red’ Bash Raises Green for Hartford Arts Council

red4red6At first (red) blush, someone would think it was Christmas or St. Valentine’s Day over at The Society Room Wednesday night, where nearly everyone there, all 350 of them,  was sporting crimson, ruby, cherry, fire engine or lipstick red wear.

But it wasn’t one of those traditionally red holidays but rather a way to raise “green” at the annual Greater Hartford Arts Council’s “Big Red for the Arts” fundraising bash.

Besides some really good food courtesy of the Hartford area’s best restaurants including Bricco, Salute, Capital Grille, Dish, Billings Forge and Trumbull Kitchen, great wines like the new awarding-winning Hopkins Vineyard Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, 2011 there was a great vibe that left no doubt that Hartford loves its arts.

“Last year we raised $68,000 and we have a bigger crowd this year,” said council president/CEOred3 Cathy Malloy, sporting the expected red dress. “It’s going to be a good night.”

It was thanks to some serious star power from Connecticut’s favorite celebrity chef Jacques Pepin and wife Gloria, just back a vacation in Mexico. Both dove right into the party spirit that included signing books and posing for pictures with clearly enthusiastic fans.

But what about the arts? was the question posed to the personable and so suave Pepin who is not only an artist in the kitchen but one at the easel at well.

“If I could not cook and could not paint I would be so dull,” he said. “I love both and as far as arts in red2life, it is no life without them.”

Pepin couldn’t help but promote his newest venture, yet another cooking show based on yet another cookbook “Jacques Pepin, Heart and Soul. ”

“I have about 200 recipes I wanted to share so they will be in a cookbook and I am doing a public television show based on the book,” explained Pepin about the new cooking series that will begin shot in California in the fall.  “I don’t know how many more I can do because you know, soon I’ll be 80,” he teased, referring to the landmark birthday in 2015.

The bargain of the night, the sole live auction item, an at-home dinner for 8 prepared by Sheraton Hotel chef  James King.  Valued at $2,000 it went for $1800.

“They got a deal,” remarked Gloria Pepin. “A real good deal.”

HSO’s ‘Playing With Food’ Time Again!

hso8The concert date is set, April 26,  and so are the restaurants and the chefs that participating in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s 2nd annual “Playing with Music” program.

You might remember it from last year. Hartford-area restaurants interpreted pieces of music with food and HSO conductor Carolyn Kuan chose music to go with menu dishes. The event climaxed with a symphony playing the music while the restaurants featured the foods.

This year’s restaurants and chefs  have been announced and they are:

Apricots Restaurant and Pub- Chef and Owner Ann Howard, Grants Restaurant and Bar / Restaurant Bricco- Chef and Owner Billy Grant, Max Downtown- Pastry Chef Warren Hardman,Treva Restaurant / A Vert- Chef and Owner Dorjan Puka and Trumbull Kitchen Executive Chef Chris Torla

It’s On The Racks, CT Magazine’s 2013 Best of CT

That time of the year again folks. The September issue of Connecticut Magazine is out and so is its coveted   “Best of Connecticut” list for 2013.

 The Hartford area has fared pretty well when it comes to who made the statewide “best of” list in categories including fun, dining, gift shops, spas and more, all part of the 16th annual edition compiled by magazine editors.

The Hartford area made its biggest mark when it comes to dining. Manchester’s Cosmic Omelet was named best “eggs” in the breakfast category with Daybreak Coffee Roasters in Glastonbury and JoJo’s Coffee Roasting Co. in Hartford making the list for best “coffee bars.”

Firebox in Hartford was named best “farm-to-table” in the menu/cuisine category while the city’s Trumbull Kitchen was named best for its “gluten free” menu.

Tulmeadow Farm in Simsbury made the best “ice cream” list while Hartford DISH made it into one of the new categories, “Dog-Friendly Dining.”  But it’s not what you think.

The category highlights restaurants who may not serve Rover his own entrees tableside, but the family dog “is welcome to enjoy the atmosphere and a table scrap or two at the outdoor seating area on warm sunny days.”

The landmark Rein’s Deli in Vernon once again named best “deli” in the dining out “ETC.” category. Named best “Greasy Spoon” was Middletown’s Mo’s Midtown.

Best new chef is Hartford On20’s Jeffrey Lizotte and best pastry chef, Millwright’s Kristin Eddy in Simsbury. Best tearoom went to Hartford’s Tisane and in the best “diners” category; Corey’s Catsup & Mustard, O’Rourke’s in Middletown and Parkside Café in Bristol all got the magazine’s nod.

Mondo in Middletown made the best “pizza” list and when it came to the best “neighborhood restaurant,” Hartford’s First & Last Tavern fit the best bill.

In the sandwich variations category, Plan B burger Bar with many locations including West Hartford and Simsbury made the “burger” grade, and on the best “barbecue” list, Smoking with Chris in Southington also pleased the editors.

The list also includes a “Family” activity category and in the Hartford area Riverfront Miniature Golf in Farmington was a best place to go along with the Brownstone Discovery Park in Portland and Crocodile Cove Water Park at Lake Compounce in Bristol.

In the antiques category, shops including Antiques on the Farmington in Canton, the Flea Circus in Canton and Irreplaceable Artifacts in Middletown were all award winners.

And as far as services, Vinnie’s Jump & Jive community dance hall in Middletown was cited as an award winning place to learn how to dance.
