Character Building

2013.05.13 – Middletown- CT – I covered a high school baseball game this afternoon between Xavier and Amity, the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the latest Courant poll at Palmer Field in Middletown. It was a fun game to cover as the teams battled back and forth but as the game went into the final inning and Amity held a one run lead things got a little interesting.
I was setup in the bleachers on the first base side where the Amity team’s dugout was located and a few of the parents were pacing the area. Things were getting tense as Xavier tied the game and had a man on 1st with two outs when when one parent commented, “Don’t worry, this builds character”. Another remarked and chuckled ” Yeah, in 50 years we won’t remember this anyway” which drew a few chuckles from other parents. Then Matt Albanese of Xavier stole second base and when the throw from Amity catcher Christopher Cimmino got past SS Jake Russo the ball wound up in the outfield.

When the ball was bobbled in centerfield Albanese then hustled to his feet and was able to score the winning run as his teammates rushed from the dugout to welcome him home for a 6-5 victory.
As I was leaving I passed a few of the parents and said, “Just remember, it’s a character builder”. One parent turned and responded “That’s my son in centerfield”.I felt bad for my remark but I know that it wasn’t taken in a bad way and then another parent spoke up, “We’ll play them again and get them then”.
Good luck boys and I hope to be covering the rematch.
