In 1968 Amby Burfoot, became the first collegiate athlete to win the Boston Marathon.
Bill Rodgers, his Wesleyan teammate, went on to won the Boston and New York Marathon four times each between 1975 and 1980.
Sunday in Middletown the two raced together again with nearly 300 runners that included Olympian Donn Cabral and some of the state’s best running talent.
Burfoot called the event “a Woodstock for runners” and before passing out the winners’ medals observed, with a smile, “This is the first time I’ve lost in Middletown.”
