A new survey of recent college graduates out of Rutgers University getting attention today shows they are struggling to find full-time work, live independently and to pay off their college loans. The poll or 444 graduates between 2006 and 2011 also raises some difficult questions about the cost and usefulness of college.

Parents and college kids will want to look at the results, which make you wonder a little about the value of a college education. Here are a few charts that summarize some of the data:

    Hope and Change!

Slogans don’t put food on the table or help you pay your bills. All of those 18 and 19 year old who ran to the polls back in 2008 to vote for Obama are probably scratching their heads today, at least I hope they are in the very least asking themselves…Why did I vote for Obama?

  2. Jimbo says:

How’s that hopey changey thing workin’ out for ya? How’s that Malloy tax and spend thing workin’ out for ya?

Keep voting liberals into office and the country/state will be in the crapper in no time.

  3. Todd Zaino says:

If you’re looking for a group to hug trees, save whales, inspect your children’s school lunches, run guns down to Mexico, and abort babies…well go round up some liberals.

If you are looking for law and order, common sense, pro-life, and people that actually know something about job creation and economics…go find some moderates and conservatives.

  4. Castello says:

Self employed none, we are taught to go to school get good grades and get a good job, but where are the jobs, outsourced……why the schools not teaching business ownership…..but when the president advocates for incentives to the companies that are utilizing American products and keeping jobs in America you guys don’t focus on that, you pick and choose what you want to remember and what you want to focus on. Ask the moderates and conservatives why they outsourcing the jobs.

  5. Bryne says:

Todd Zaino – The progressive, 21st century train is about to run you over. I sympathize with the fact – that like most near extinct species – that you are fighting for survival in a world that is passing you by. My advice? Get on the train. “Resistance is futile.”

This is the first time I have ever commented on an article. I agree that there is a huge concern about unemployment and job opportunities for college grads. Unfortunately, this data is incomplete and potentially misleading. The study shows that 51% of recent grads are working full-time. It appears that an additional 12% are seeking FT employment. We do not know how many of the remaining 39% are actually seeking FT work. Choosing graduate school, military, PT work, etc have always been options that some grads have chosen. Do I believe it is tough out there for new grads? Sure. I would be interested in knowing how many of those 39% are doing what they want and how many are actually seeking FT employment.

    @Brune

Did you see the 2010 mid-term election results? Hopefully we’ll see the same moderate to conservative trend this November 6.

Obama didn’t get us in this mess, please remember.

      • Richard says:

Obama was elected to the Senate in November 2004. He’s coming up on 8 years as one of the 100 most important and well-placed politicians in America.

Of course he shares the blame.

  8. Richard says:

There’s plenty of evidence that recessions are rough on grads. The problem is they keep coming: there is a fresh crop every year.

3 years into a recession a grad is out of the loop. The campus job fairs are targeted at this years grads, the local job fairs are targeted at those with some recent job experience or employed job changers.

THen there’s the potential mistake of grad school. Some go to get marketable skills in math or sciences or health to compliment their liberal arts degree. Others add to their misery by doubling up on an unemployable major and then repeat their same failing job search learning essentially nothing from the prior job search.

  9. Greg says:

I heard there are a ton of jobs out there for Art History and Womyn’s Studies majors…

Wow – you folks are suffering from serious bitterness, anger and hatefulness. I will say a prayer for you. Naively, I used to think our country had moved past that kind of poison.
