Death Penalty Repeal: Malloy Steps Up To National Stage
Gov. Malloy was in Texas today at the NAACP’s annual meeting, winning praise for Connecticut’s repeal of the death penalty. The governor was honored by NAACP President Ben Jealous (pictured below) for his “courageous commitment to civil rights.”
Malloy’s office released these comments:
Earlier this year, Connecticut joined 16 other states and the rest of the industrialized world in replacing capital punishment with life in prison without the possibility of parole. It’s an issue that stirs deep emotion — dividing families and communities, but it also ultimately speaks to our common goal of ensuring integrity in our justice system.

Regardless that the majority of Connecticut citizens wished to have the death penalty remain as law, but used in an expeditious manner, our governor Dan Malloy once again thumped his nose at voters and did what he wanted. Now he is on the national stage triumphing his courageous decision with an eye towards a position in DC. He should be spending his time back here in CT working with his beloved unions on balancing the budget, you know, the one that fell short despite the $ 180 million dollars in savings from union suggestion boxes. It took some nerve for him to broadcast that CT now had an honest budget when he knew smoke and mirrors clouded the real picture – despite his largest tax increase in CT history. CT deserves better.
Dan doesn’t share my sense of humor. I would have told the NAACP: “I did it to save the lives of two white men.”
