In the fight of his political life, Chris Donovan blew what could be his last chance.

The House Speaker and 5th District Congressional candidate embroiled in an ugly campaign scandal should have stepped up to the podium Friday afternoon and declared that he had been betrayed by trusted staff members. He had a shining chance to declare not only did he know nothing about the money-for-influence scheme the FBI alleges his trusted aides were up to their necks in, but that he is outraged.

Instead, we got a stand-in who leaves us wondering. Why wasn’t Chris Donovan defending himself instead of Tom Swan, who replaced the campaign manager Donovan sacked Thursday along with his finance director and another staff member. Even worse, we got a promise for the time-honored “internal investigation” paid for by the campaign – a contrived stall tactic to avoid talking for days.

Because I don’t think all government is corrupt, I want to believe Donovan

Why would Donovan make any statements that can be used against him later? Better to see how deep the Federal rabbit hole goes.

Rick- I think lots of people like Donovan. But it was more than obvious union money bought the guy. Now we have a simple glimpse into his money machine and we see how dirty it is. Usually they are able to hide this. FBI did an incredible job exposing this. They are probably being kind to Donovan not exposing the rest of the iceberg. Donovan has two options, try to survive through this (but he doesnt know exactly what the Feds know) or get out while he can save face and not have the entire money machine exposed.

  3. I am wondering what Mr. Campaign Finance Reform (a.k.a. Tom Swan) is doing as heading a dirty campaign.

I though he was a good government type. I guess I was mistaken about that.

You have to love that Henry Ray Soucy was a vocal union treasurer for ASFSCME rejecting the correction officers contract.

Rick, it may be true, as you say, that not “all” government is corrupt. That said, clearly SOME of it is corrupt. It very well could be that MOST of it is corrupt. I for one am growing tired of the steady stream of “corruption in Connecticut” stories … which spring from both sides of the aisle (which shows the problem is not a partisan one).

For me, the fact that Donovan failed to show up for reporters and sent his brand-new campaign manager to face them in his stead, says just about everything that needs to be said about him. It tells me he’s aware something isn’t right in his campaign. It tells me he’s a coward who can’t or won’t face the music. In short, it tells me that, at worst, he’s corrupt; and at best, he’s too craven to endure a confrontation.

Either way, he clearly doesn’t have the cojones to handle being in Congress. The best thing he can do, for himself, the 5th district, and Connecticut as a whole, is to resign now, go away, and never again darken the doors of the corridors of power.

Lots of unrpoven stuff……Who would have thought the Golden boy the Liberals love could do anything wrong!

Perhaps one party rule is NOT a good thing!!!!

  9. iamjh says:

There is so far no published evidence that Donovan has done anything wrong. Some commenters do not seem aware that the alleged bribes to campaign workers came from tobacco stores, not unions.
    Donovan is an honest man.
I question why the FBi chose Donovan as a sting target. Out of all Congressional candidates — why the most pro-union, progressive candidate in the country?
Donovan is a victim of malicious government agents and stupid staff.

    • PsiCop says:

If he’s so “honest,” why was he too much of a coward to face reporters and simply insist he’s done nothing wrong?

As I posted earlier, even if Donovan did nothing wrong, that he fled from a confrontation is not to his credit; it demonstrates he doesn’t have the fortitude for higher office.

Can you imagine the impact passing through to our corrupt legal system into the hands of corrupt judges?

  11. Matt says:

Chris Donovan is the definition of deceitful. For 20 years he has been dis-honest, telling Connecticut voters that “he is for the working man” all the while voting to increase our taxes and spending every cent of revenue that he can on one wasteful project after another. Donovan has three core beliefs, increase taxes, grow government and big union labor, all three ingredients that have chased business out of the state and keeps new companies from coming here. And now this…. more deceit, more lies, more denying…Chris please do the people of Connecticut a favor and go away, you have done enough damage to our state.
