One hundred sixty eight school districts in Connecticut are protected from state budget cuts. Out of 169 districts, one isn’t: the home town of the very loud Dannel Malloy critic state Rep. Lawrence Cafero. A Republican.

Norwalk will lose $72,000, less than what it costs to fund a teacher, under Gov. Malloy’s proposed budget, so this is hardly a significant cut. Instead, it’s a clear message to Cafero, a grandstanding pol who has taken aim at some of Malloy’s signature initiatives, like Bioscience Connecticut.

Malloy’s office says it’s merely the good government governor cleaning up budget tricks engineered by his predecessor. What an embarrassing rationale. The formula used to fund education is constructed around budget devices designed to preserve aid to districts like Norwalk that struggle to serve middle class and poor students.

During the campaign, I was largely wrong about Malloy, a candidate I frequently criticized. He’s been the sort of solid, forward-thinking governor we desperately need. But this petty gesture is the Dan Malloy Connecticut doesn’t need: hyper-competitive and mean-spirited.

Gov. Malloy is better than this.

  1. Rick Green comments regarding Governor Maloy being mean spirited is right on. If he would spend more time on state issues and less time doing paybacks we all would be behind him a little more. The same thing happened and is happening with the State police. The only names in the D-Snap program were two troopers and now he wants to reduse their numbers because they disagreed with what he wanted as give backs. No dought he cannot handle negative comments. He needs to be a governor who leads by example not by who needs paybacks.

Forget hyper-competitive and mean spirited, it’s straight up retailation. I recall our fine governor throwing the State Troopers and Corrections folks under the bus during/after the big concessions bruhaha.

On top of that, look at how his staff responds to any sort of criticism of his policies. Moody’s downgrades CT and the petulent children start trashing and insulting the ratings agency like a scene from Mean Girls, strangely without a clue of how credit ratings or credit worthiness is actually determined. The man and his minions simply cannot take criticism without throwing a fit.

And Malloy blames prior administrations for the budget issues we have; What about the legislature? What have they done to represent the people of this state and propose a fair budget, lower the cost of living, lower the tax burden, make the state more business friendly? Furthermore, what has the legislature done to means-check each of the governor’s propsals? At any rate, kudos to Malloy for making the inhabitants of the capital building his personal rubber stamp.
