I’ve been a little hard on Dan Roberti because I’m not sure he’s ready for a run for Congress at his tender age. Roberti, however,  stopped by today to remind me that 5th District voters may be looking for an independent-minded Democrat this year. He plans to continue his shoe-leather campaign of knocking on doors and visiting all 41 municipalities in the district.

Roberti is also a student of Connecticut politics and unexpected victories by young candidates. The Kent resident pointed to Chris Murphy’s victory over Nancy Johnson. He also noted that the district is unpredictable: John Rowland won at the tender age of 27.

Roberti is 30. The seat is up for grabs. So who knows?

He faces Chris Donovan, who has the party endorsement, and Elizabeth Esty, a Cheshire Democrat, in the August primary.

Here are a few words from him:

Roberti says he’s got student loans too! So you know, Dan can relate to the rest of us….

But a quick look at his campaign donations suggest he grew up in a whole other world.

$10,000 to the DCCC, while still a student?

$2500 to the Vermont State Party, while living in a Penthouse apartment, at 40 Central Park South?

$2300 to Barack Obama while working for the Roberti Family Trust?

And then for political expediency Dan “moves” out of his Dad’s $8.9 Million estate, to go officially live with his brother in a modest $200,000 house?

I want to see Dan’s student loans. And then I want to see his tax returns. Particularly for a year or two before he decided to run for Congress.

If Dan Roberti can prove he can win the district, then I will give him serious consideration. Otherwise if Chris Donovan beats him, not only can Donovan not win because he does not fit the district but Democrats like me will vote for Roraback. Donovan is too extreme even for Democrats.
